Did anyone here go to Indiana University in Bloomington?  I am starting my MBA at IU and was wondering if anyone had recs on things to do in town, places to eat, etc.  It is a professional program, so I won't be in Bloomington much, but the times I am there I would like to know where to shop, eat, etc. for any down time I may have.

I have a good friend who just finished up some Ph.D. work at IU. She's always said that Bloomington is pretty sparse when it comes to good restaurants/bars. I also think that Dizzy went/goes there so you should send her a PM.

Sigh. I went there. I really couldn't recommend a restaurant for good food. The Thai place on the corner of Lincoln and Kirkwood was not awful. The Indian place on the corner of 6th and walnut was pretty good. The veegan spot on the corner of Walnut and sixth as well was fun. The Runcible Spoon had a good breakfast (horrible service and every time I went there at least one culinary item on the table hadn't been washed). The rest were blah. For coffee, the choices are: Soma, a really cute, overpriced and super slow independent shop with decent brew and FABULOUS special lattes (for like, $5 - my favorite was called "The Lewinski") off Kirkwood. And the Bakehouse, a really cute, overpriced and super slow independent shop on the square with sorta-bad lattes. Or Starbucks.

If you have to be in the midwest, it's probably one of the better places to be. The selections are generally better than Applebees or whatever. But my tastebuds barely survived. I hated feeling so overcharged. And oh my god the clothes were horrible! Horrible! And the hair! It's all coming back now.... arghhh!

Ok now that I have posted my opinion, any rabid Indiana lovers who find this are going to be shocked, shocked, and maybe come find me. That place has FANS. I've never seen anything like it. People love that little town. And again, it's one of the best places in the midwest. I know I sound awful saying this. I just hated it there so much. The day I moved to a big city, I went to a really great Thai place and almost cried with relief at escaping Bloomington's clutches... So sorry I can't be more help. I have kind of a bad attitude about the place.

Well, after that review I'm glad I'm only going to be there a few weeks!! smile

I didn't expect it to be a metropolis of good food/clothes, but they have a great B school, so alas, I will make it through.  Growing up in the midwest, I didn't expect it to be great, but I didn't expect it to be as bad as it sounds either... eek!  I guess the difference between Kansas City and Bloomington is vast... 

So one last question - Any good diners??  If they don't have great "good" food, the next best thing is to find a good greasy spoon...
