I just spoke with my OB today, and essentially I am going to be starting Clomid after I get my next period.  Although my bloodwork has been essentially normal (and no cysts were seen on my hysterosonogram), he feels I may have a "mild" form of PCOS, and I am on Metformin for this.  However, I am not ovulating...I had this verified by an endometrial biopsy that I had performed last week.

So...has anyone been on Clomid or knows someone that has been on Clomid?  I just want to get some ideas of what to expect.  I know to expect some mood swings and cramping...but does everyone get this?  I also know I have a higher chance of twins (or even more!).  I will be meeting with my OB to start it after I get my period, but I want to get some input from people first hand.  Thanks!

I'm not on clomid, but I do have PCOS and I've found the "Soul Cysters" forum to be invaluable. Those women have taught me more about PCOS than my doctor! I found the forum thanks to Elle....I don't know if I ever said thanks Elle, but seriously I really, really appreciate it. It has been a huge help to me - I visit every day!

I know many, many people who've been on clomid and to be honest many have pronounced side effects - hot flashes, irritablility, bloating, weepiness.  And some hardly notice it!  It really depends on the person and the side effects usually get worse as the dose is increased.  It's the magic ticket for lots of people though!  And good thing is that you only have to take it for a week or so at a time!

The risk for twins isn't really terribly high (for clomid), unless you overstimulate (OHSS) in which case you'd be cancelled for that cycle.  There are signs to watch out for that your doc will tell you about, but the chances of that - especially on a starter dose - is waaay down there.  Most docs start you on 50 mg/day, the typical 'test' dose.  If it causes you to ovulate that's the dose you'd likely stick with, but in almost every case it causes you to only produce 1 or maybe 2 eggs at a time.  That's generally the goal of clomid - to provide a 'strong' ovulation of one or two eggs, as opposed to injectables where the goal is usually quantity.

Is your doc going to be monitoring your follicle development?  Some do ultrasounds so they can see how you're responding, some just have you do at-home ovulation tests.  The ultrasounds pinpoint your progress more exactly, and are used frequently if you're doing an IUI and/or a trigger shot.  Do you know if you're doing a trigger, or if it will be a 'let's see how this goes' kind of cycle?

I know of a great resource that was put together by people who've actually taken clomid themselves too, if you'd like it.  Good luck!  I hope it works well for you!

You're quite welcome!  Glad you find it helpful smile.gif.  I haven't visited there in awhile, so I didn't recall if it had info on fertility treatments and the like ...?

Thanks girls!  I will definitely check out that soul cysters forum.  I'm not sure exactly how I will be monitored...I have a feeling it will be with basal temps/OTK's first.  I don't believe he will be starting me on any injections yet...I think I'm going to just try Clomid first.   I will be meeting with him on Day 3 of my next cycle (whenever that will actually be...I'm not ovulating and I'm obviously not regular), so we'll see what he says.

Elle, if you could send me that resource you spoke about, that would be great!  Thanks smile
