Spam and hacker attacks increasing - some simple precautionary measures
Permalink Closed

This was sent internally at my office - thought I'd share for those of you who may not be aware:

Todays Great Lakes IT Report featured an article on the increasingly sophisticated attacks from spammers and hackers trying to break into systems, steal ids, bank information, etc.

http://www.glitr.com/Article.asp?id=545589&spid=

The article gives some simple precautionary measures from Ann Arbor-based SpamStopsHere that can help avoid certain kinds of phishing and other attacks:

* If an email asks you to log-in to your bank, PayPal, eBay or other personal account, assume it is a phishing scam.

* Never enter banking information, social security numbers or other sensitive information into any web site that resulted from clicking a link in an e-mail.

* Never enter your computer user name and password into any e-mail that requests it, not even if it claims to be from your IT manager or other coworker. It is easy for a spammer to forge the sender's name.

*If you unsure as to the legitimacy of a particular e-mail, open an Internet browser and manually type in the URL of the institution in question, e.g. "www.chase.com." Do not use the URL in the email as a reference, as it may be a forgery.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks, D. It's really amazing what phishers can do--I've gotten a ton of PayPal and eBay emails that look completely legit. There was literally nothing wrong with them other than a link went to a login page and that page wasn't an eBay or PayPal page.

Thanks for this!  I also get a ton of phishing email from Ebay and Paypal.  One thing to keep in mind is that whenever Ebay or Paypal sends you an email, it should say "Dear your name" in the body of the email.  If it doesn't, and says something like "Dear Ebay Customer" or such it's a spoof email.  Here's a link from Ebay to read:

These are great, D. I would also recommend that any time that you receive a suspicious email from Ebay, PayPal, or a bank that you've never dealt with that you forward that email to the company. I've done this with every single phishing email that I've gotten and I was actually told by some random bank that it really helps them to catch the phisher by getting those emails. It's also good because the company in question may have no idea this is going on and this allows them to alert their actual customers there is a problem.

I always do this too -- it only take a minute, and I like to do what I can to help try to stop people from doing this. the ebay ones are easy -- just forward them to spoof@ebay.com
