Italian travel: Amalfi coast, Sardinia?
Permalink Closed

** I posted this in travel first but that area doesn't seem to get as much traffic...**

FH and I thinking about going to Italy for our honeymoon. Our wedding is June 28, and we want to go someplace warm and relaxing and (of course) romantic. I'm reading a book right now called "In Love in Italy" and the Amalfi coast and Sardinia both sound amazing, but like they might be really crowded. Has anyone ever been to either area, and what did you think of it? Thanks in advance!

I've been to Naples and Capri, which I think is part of the Amalfi Coast (or nearby). I was there in mid-late June 2006. It was really beautiful. I found Capri to be pretty crowded, but Naples wasn't, really. The contrast between the two was pretty jarring. Naples was very charming -- it's a poorer part of Italy for most of the natives, but people are really friendly; they really live "la dolce vita." I actually found that Capri, while very pretty, was sort of a generic beach-town touristy vibe, and pretty expensive. We did go out on a little boat around the coast, and while it scared me to death, that was the best part! Truthfully, I enjoyed Tuscany and Florence far more than Southern Italy.

The closest I've been is Naples and I really loved it. It's definitely not for everyone, but there is a lot of amazing art there. And pizza! The Amalfi coast is supposed to be gorgeous but I assume it will be pretty crowded in June-July. Last year when I went to Cinque Terre in June it was packed with American tourists which sort of canceled out the romance but maybe the Amalfi coast won't be as bad. I've never been to Sardinia but it's on my list!

Now that I hear two reviews of Naples we'll look into that too. :) Thanks, CC!
