If I buy a pair of brown Prada suede boots, and I want them to be black, would I be crazy to dye them?  Would it lower the quality/ ruin the boots?

I think you would be crazy to do it!  If it worked out, that would be fine, but if it didn't, I think you would regret it forever.  Wait for a black pair of just get the brown--don't dye!

Gah, the point is moot. The boots sold out before my eyes! There was only one size and it was MY size but I dicked around too long buying.. one of those things that bothers you in retrospect;) I'm thinking of paying a higher price for a pair later in the year.. depends on how much work I pick up writing on the side in the next couple of months. Boo to my miss!! But you guys are the best!!
