shopping for birkenstock gizeh- *update- bought black leather-$60!!*
Permalink Closed

hello all!
ive decided to do a second semester in the tropics and i think that gizehs will be practical- but i am having trouble choosing a color/material combo

my clothes are in neutrals, classic style(jeans,chinos,navy/black/white linen)- i am chocolate colored- i dont' want anything so trendy/loud that i can't wear them years from now (i'm worried about "getting over" the black patent and silver quickly?), but i dont' want them to scream crunchy either- thoughts?

(ps- anyone seen these cheaper elsewhere?)

ablack patent (synthetic material) $62
btaupe memphis suede $99
cglossy black leather $89
d pebble grain faux leather $54 (in navy or brown)
esilver faux leather $70
f$57 blue faux leather + overseas shipping
gice faux nubuck $57 + overseas shipping
hsoft grey synthetic material $57 + overseas shipping
ichestnut leather

thanks for the help all!(so sorry for the long list of colors, i'm really indecisive today...)

I like the way the silver look, but I think being in the tropics with high humidity, you'd want real leather, not faux, so I say go with the taupe suede (b). I think those are the most neutral and will go with a lot.

I like the glossy black. I also like the look of the pebble grain.

I like the glossy black leather and the chestnut leather. Real leather is probably the way to go where you are at. I'm sure they would last longer too.

I like glossy black. I think you should have real leather, they aren't patent or silver (so perhaps not as trendy or flashy and you won't get sick of them as quickly) and I don't think they "scream crunchy" like some brown ones might.

i will be studying in uganda- spent this past semester there- decided i am getting a lot out of it, so i am going back for the spring too

and GOSH, i didn't even know they came in pebble grain silver!! (do you have a pic?) thats the problem with these shoes- SO many colors, and the novelty colors seem to change every year. Not enough colors in real leather and nubuck though, it seems

I like the glossy black leather!

Are these sandals comfy? They're cute and if they are, I'd like to get a pair for spring.

I haven't owned a pair since the early-mid 90s. I recall they were very comfy but there may have been a breaking in period because the sole forms to your foot.

Once, in hs, my bff borrowed my birkenstocks. They were in the car and she didn't like the shoes she had worn that day (we carpooled). We had an afternoon class together and she came limping in and cried "Your arches are so high!" smile

Thanks so much for all of your help ladies!

I went to a local store, where they had the taupe suede in my size and tried it on for sizing purposes- i am a size 8.5 normally, but i liked how the size 38 fit better than 39 (38= 7/7.5)- go figure.

i came across the glossy black leather at endless.com (run by amazon) for $60.90 shipped (!!) so i ordered. (free return shipping as well)

incidentially, for those interested, sierra trading post has a bunch of leather colors on sale at the moment

thanks again guys!
