A dumb question about prenatal vitamins
Permalink Closed

I read that prenatal vitamins, which are high in biotin and folic acid, help your hair grow fast. I bought some at Wal-Mart, but they say they're for pregnant/nursing women.

Here's my dumb question: Are there different types of prenatal vitamins? Like, ones for pregnant woman and ones for woman who are trying to get pregnant? I know, dumb question!

Also, I noticed that the bottle I bought didn't have biotin listed, which I thought was the thing that made your hair grow faster. I haven't opened them yet - should I take them back for a different brand?

TIA!

There are different formulations of prenatal vitamins, some you can only get by prescription.  The MAIN difference which prenatal vitamins have is the higher amount of folic acid...I'm not sure about biotin.  It is recommended for women trying to get pregnant to be on prenatal vitamins at least a month before getting pregnant, so yes it is safe for non-pregnant women.  As for biotin, if you want to take it purely for nail/hair purposes, GNC makes a formulation of 2500 mcg pills, which is higher than other supplements are going to give you.

Did your bottle have Vitamin H or B7 listed- that's actually what biotin is. If you're ever ever going to have kids, it's not a bad idea to take the prenatals- they're just like regular one-a-days but with folic acid and more iron in them (and generally less Vitamin A). Prenatals are fine for any woman, pregnant or not.

Do you already take vitamins? If you do, I would just skip the PNV and just take a biotin supplement.

Thanks ladies! I'm not trying to get pregnant or anything so I wasn't sure.

I already do take a multi (Centrum) and a biotin supplement, but I wasn't sure if it had enough biotin in it to make a difference in my hair and nails. I think I'll just take the prenatals back and continue with my multi and biotin.

I just looked at the list on the bottle awhile ago and I don't remember seeing H or B7 listed.

just a FYI- if you are familiar with the brand Nioxin- its a professional hair product for thinning people- they make vitamins and i take them. they are amazing- my hair and nails grow so fast on them. they have 300mg of biotin in them. you could probably find them at an Ulta or Beauty First or Beauty Brands- they are awesome!

When my SIL was on prenatals, her hair was luxuriously long and full.  I remember that I complimented her on it one day, and she said that it was the prenatal vitamins.
