do the men in your life own a tuxedo?

as FH and I get closer to our wedding (6/28/08) we're debating the topic of if he should buy a tuxedo or not. we have a black tie event later this month and i wonder if it would just make sense financially to buy one instead of renting a tux twice, but he thinks he'll never need to wear one except for these two times so why bother making an investment. my dad and brother both own one, but they're more into dressy events than FH is. so, how about the men you know? do they own or rent? TIA!

I know one man who owns his own tuxedo, but he goes to dressy events a couple times a year so it makes sense to him. One other man owns his own because he's skeeved out by the idea of renting, but honestly I think it's dumb of him to have it because he rarely has a formal event. But no other man I know owns his own. HTH!

My step-father-in-law is the only person I know who owns a tux (well, actually, one of my bosses just bought one this week).  My SFIL's tux is probably really old.  And, because his wife (my husband's mom) is a more formal person, they are more likely to go to special events.  No one else.

My bf does and actually my ex did as well. My ex got his at a great price and it made sense at the time with tons of h.s. and college formals and my current bf had to get his mainly for singing in concerts. I actually don't like his tux at all and wish he would get a new one!
Anyway, if I were you I'd figure out how much it will cost to rent a tux twice and then look around to see how much a tux he likes (or sort of likes?) runs. I doubt he'll never have an occasion to wear one again and as long as his weight doesn't fluctuate and he doesn't choose a really trendy style it could be worth it to buy one.

Yes.

My BF only owns one super-classic suit, but his younger brother bought the tux that Seth wore on the last episode of the OC for his own wedding. As far as I know, he's only worn it once, but the tux was one of the things that was really important. The tux could come in handy if you end up having a lot of black-tie/evening weddings to go to in the future.

I think BF would buy one if he knew he was going to wear it more than once. He's not a fan of the rental tux either.

Nope, all the guys I know rent one when needed, which isn't often. My husband hasn't needed one since our wedding seven years ago. He does have a really nice black suit he wears when he needs to get dressed up, but no tux.

To rent a tux for the formal event later this month will cost $90. He rented it sight unseen from a place in my hometown because the place he tried to rent it from here (NYC) didn't want him to have it for more than one night or they'd charge a lot extra. We'll be there for at least five days so it would add up.

As for the wedding, he said he wants to rent as nice a tux as he can and then never wear one again because he hates wearing them! I was looking into nice ones to buy yesterday and he just doesn't like tuxes at all, but said he'd rather buy a really nice suit that he'd wear more often. It looks like he'll just rent both times.

No, my husband won't even wear a suit pants and a suit jacket at the same time! It's one or the other.

my thoughts exactly:) dh works on golf courses so he is outside in khakis and polo shirts all day, dressing up is only done for weddings and funerals  (although, i must say, i wish it happened more often, b/c he looks soooo nice when he does!)

maybe my DH is wierd, but he likes getting dressed up. he has several pairs of nice dress pants and ties and is looking to buy a new suit, since his other one is too big. but no tux. he just rents those. as does everyone else i know.
i sure don't mind that he enjoys looking spiffy. :)

My husband does own one, but he didn't wear it for our wedding. We rented khaki suits and I really regret not getting him his own khaki suit and having it fitted. Rentals never fit right and I think it is ashame that the men always get sidelined with their attire for the wedding. We got my husband's tux at Burlington Coat Factory years ago for $99. It was the same price as a rental and he was able to use it for all the formal weddings we attended during that time. I think even if he doesn't wear it again, at least he will feel good in a tux that fits him properly. I just hate looking at some of our wedding picture and my husband's suit just looks ill fitting.

My husband owns a tux.  My brother in law's family used to own a tuxedo store, so he had gotten it (and purchased it wholesale) from them.

DH owns a suit, but not a tux. I would choose to rent one unless he plans on wearing it again soon.

FIL owns a tux, but he's the CEO of a Fortune 100 company and probably needs one. Hubby doesn't have one and has only worn one at our wedding. Our parties aren't that fancy, and no one invites us to any. Oh well.

Actually, yes. My boyfriend has one for black tie occasions. I hardly very few people with tailcoats, though.

If you have a nice consignment shop in your town, I've heard that you can sometimes find very nice gently used tuxedoes for bargain prices.

DH considered buying a tux for our wedding, but went with a gorgeous black Donna Karan suit instead, which he wears frequently. (He has several suits, but this is his only black one, so it gets worn the most.)

Our friends aren't very fancy so I don't predict him needing to have one, and he's pretty much lost his taste for dressing up anyway.

Husband does not, but has a pretty dressy black suit.

My dad has one though.
