Do you work out?

Do you work out? How often and for how long? What do you do? What motivates you?

I don't work out at all right now and I really need to start. I'm just curious what other people's routines and motivations are.

I work out 4-5 times per week.  I usually do a kickboxing class for one hour, a treadmill incline/running class for 45 minutes, spinning for one hour, and 1-2 45 minute elliptical workouts.  I try to do free weights/pushups/abs 1-2 days a week, but that doesn't always happen.  I try to work out one day a week before work, both weekend days, and 1-2 days after work so I don't get too bored with doing the same thing at the same time every day.

In the summer, it's so much easier because I can mix up classes at the gym with outdoor runs, but the wintertime is tough.

My main motivation is being healthy (and it doesn't hurt that I can have an extra cookie or two if I want)! Also,  I feel so great after a workout -- leaner, more focused, and just more confident overall.  Whenever I'm feeling stressed or out of control, a good workout usually helps me see things more clearly.

I rock climb. It does stunners for your body- lean lean lean and long muscles. Your abs and your core are so strong. I went from being out of breath walking up hills to doing five solid chin ups on an overhead bar. I used to paddle on the water, too, and horseback ride. I hate traditional sports like volley ball, field hockey and soccer. I could never get into them at all.

Yeah I do! Currently 3 x a week hour of weight training, 5 x a week of 30 min cardio.

The only thing that ever motivates me is by having workout partners and set times to work out. If I dont have buddies to keep me accountable I dont go.

I find that by joining a class or club and making friends helps you to show up :)

I am thinking about trying a indoor rock climbing club with my DH - he and I have been thinking it would be fun :)

I do. I'm not as dedicated as some of the others but my minimum goal is cardio 3 x week (at least one run - I'm aiming to get my run time longer but I'm pretty terrible at running). My ultimate goal is cardio 5 x week and weights 2-3 x week. The ultimate goal is very unlikely to happen this month at all. It's always so busy in December!

I have no motivation except for a pair of jeans I recently bought that requires the loss of a few pounds to look good. Plus I always need to lose weight, so there's that. Running requires the most motivation. The only thing that really works is setting and achieving a new goal each week. Right now I'm trying to add time and/or distance to my run. When I reach my goal, I'm seriously excited and happy. It makes me feel like I can do anything. I don't really need motivation for other activities because I go to the gym with a friend and a book. One or the other amuses me through the process. (I really like reading while doing the elliptical. I find it's practically the only time I get to myself where no one else can interrupt me and when I'm not tempted to turn on the tv.)

I don't.  I am one of the least athletic people I know.  It is so hard to get started too.

ditto. I like doing yoga occasionally just because I love the stretching feeling, and I take/took ballroom dancing classes (I'm still looking for a new studio since I've moved). But neither of those are really that intense. I've tried going to the gym or doing things just for the sake of exercising but it's just all soooooo boring to me.

me too. Even the things I know I like (yoga, swimming) are hard for me to actually start.

It is good to know I am not the only pathetic one out there, HA! I actually used to be really good about working out, but I have been terrible for a little over a year. We even have an exercise room with nice equipment in our condo (so I don't even have to walk out of my front door) and I still don't do it. I am trying to get back on the horse though. Not only are we going on vacation in February, but I just want to feel better about myself. I am small, but I have a heart condition so it is important that I do cardio to keep myself healthy.

I just started working out, so my work out is not as intense as what others listed. I work 3x a week. About 30 mins cardio on my exercise bike, and then I do some arm weights, some crunches, and some stretching.

I'm starting off in baby steps. I don't need to lose weight, because I'm skinny. My purpose is to start getting into a routine of exercising to be healthy, and hopefully to tone up.

I also hate cardio, but I feel better afterwards. It's a great feeling to feel focused after a workout.

I go through phases with going to the gym because I get bored with it. A friend and I recently joined an indoor rock-climbing gym. I LOVE it. I take dance classes every now and then and I just found an adult gymnastics class that starts in January and I'm super excited about that.

I don't.  I walk about an hour a day for work commutes (split into 15 minute chunks), so i'm not totally sedentary, but I don't count that.  I'll have periods (usually that last about a month) where I'll work out a few times a week, either running during the summer or joining a gym.  And then I'll stop for months at a time.
I'd like to join the gym again (it's only $6/month and 6 blocks from my house) and my first goal is realistic- work out twice a week.  One weekend day, one week night, and go from there.  I would like to do about 30 minutes cardio, and 30 minutes weight room.  Ideally, I'd like to get to 3 or 4 times a week and mix it up more.  It's so hard for me in the winter.

I don't either. I go through phases of doing pilates, but I have a really hard time exercising because I get really bored. I rarely do one thing at a time EVER, so it is hard for me to just work out. I really need to, though, for the health benefits, and to combat my sweet tooth.

I don't. It doesn't really count, but I do walk my dog every night for about 30-45 minutes.

I bought a treadmill a few months ago, so I walk on it for half an hour every morning. I started doing it just because I kept gaining weight so I wanted to lose a little and then maintain, but now I really feel a lot better since I've started walking on it regularly. I have more energy, can breathe better, and my skin has a healthy glow to it. Before the treadmill, I would try to exercise with videos but I could never keep my motivation up. And I have to do an exercise that allows me to do something else while exercising to keep myself from getting bored or constantly thinking about how much longer I still have to go. The treadmill works for me because it has a place to set a book or magazine on so I can read while I walk. I've never been an athletic type person, but the treadmill has become a regular part of my morning routine. :)

I do a weight training class once or twice a week that works the entire body, a power yoga class, and a combo yoga/pilates class - sp 4 hours a week (1 hour per each class). I love the classes because I have a set schedule that I follow each week, I show up, someone else tells me what to do, and I leave. I work out because it makes me feel good, look good, and gives me more energy.

I also space them out so that I can alternate the weights with the yoga.

I do... I do cardio 6x a week and weight training twice a week.  I do my weight training for 60 minutes with a personal trainer.  On those days, I do 30 minutes of cardio.  On the cardio only days, I do 70 minutes.  On my weight training days, I do the elliptical and on cardio only days, I run.

The best thing I have ever done from an exercise perspective is hire a personal trainer.  I highly recommend it!
