gaining clientele?
Permalink Closed

After working in another career field for the last three years I decided to return to esthetics and got a job at a new spa/salon.  Because this is a new business it's really up to me to bring in my own clients.  I am quasi outgoing but have a problem approaching people for fear that i am bothering them, etc.  I would like to 'advertise' myself and let people know what i am doing and get them to come visit me for a treatment. What are some ways that i could approach strangers and friends/family/acquaintances without being pushy or bothersome. If i approached you and said I worked for a spa what could i say to get you excited to come try the spa/treatment? Sorry so wordy! Thanks!

I have a friend that is going through the same thing right now. She left a salon where she had a large clientele built up to be closer to home. She has printed up coupons for a discount on your first visit and is giving them out to people. She seems to be getting a good reaction so far.

collegegirl- you make it sound so easy!  smile

I like what collegegirl says plus I would just keep in mind that people love spa treatments.  Thankfully, dental hygienists don't have to get their own new clients...could you imagine?

Maybe it would be easier to work-in the spa offer after you started talking about something else.  Coupons don't hurt either.

Start off with friends and family, jump into acquaintences, then strangers.

Coupons are definitely a great way to get word out...you could advertise a Christmas special in a local paper...
Or maybe work with another stylist  or mani/pedi tech in the salon to offer a hair/nails/facial package to some of their clients...

I like all the ideas so far!  I went to get a massage a few months ago and when I set up the appt, the receptionist told me I could add on a facial for $20 so I did.  When I was talking to esthetician she said that she was new and her and the massage therapist had teamed up to bring her in some business.  It definitely worked!

Honestly, I've been approached on the bus, waiting in line at the store, etc. by people who are basically just trying to advertise to me, give me their card or flyer, etc. And I always HATE that. I am much more receptive to ads or other marketing, but if someone just walks up to me randomly on the street and tries to engage me and convince me to come let them cut my hair/give me a facial/etc I will probably actually make a point not to go there.

I guess if I were you I'd put discounts on my business cards, hand them out right and left, even if you're just meeting someone socially, if you say "my name is Jennings, here's my card," then they still have it. Then ignore the fact that you need new clients, unless they ask you about your career, etc. When they empty their pockets at the end of the night, they'll see your business card and hold onto it because it has a coupon (as opposed to just throwing it away and figuring that they'd remember, but really end up forgetting). Maybe even give people two business cards, then they might pass one on to a friend. Put a business card or two inside every business correspondence envelope. After enough newbies come in lured with the coupon, you can print new business cards without the coupon on them, and rely more on your reputation to bring people in.

If you have craigslist in your area, I know that can work great for bringing in new clientele.

Ttara's advice is mine as well - print up biz cards with a coupon.

I don't know what sort of service you perform, but it would annoy me too if someone said "you need a facial/manicure/haircut/you look stressed, could you use a massage?"

Sometimes a friendly business will allow you to leave cards at the counter. Maybe a clothing store you like would be willing to bag-stuff your coupon as a "benefit" exclusively for their customers.

Thanks for the ideas girls! I'm working on the coupon/business card idea.  Things should pick up after the holidays!
