Getting out of a "rut"?

I'm not quite sure where to put this, so I guess it goes here. smile.gif

Lately, I'm feeling like I'm in a bit of a rut. No one from the outside would ever think this, because I'm very busy, have lots of hobbies that I love, have friends, etc. And generally, I'm very happy, so this isn't about being depressed. But I feel a bit restless. I want to be experiencing and doing more than I am. The problem is that many of the things I want to do either require lots of money (extensive travel), single girl friends with as much freedom as I have (going out during the week (!), briefly reliving the crazy college years by boy stalking, etc.), or a boyfriend (I doubt I need to elaborate on this one!). I have none of those three things.

So. I need cheap, basically solo or low-commitment, non-boy-involving excitement. Any ideas to save me from the winter doldrums?

hmmm, maybe picking up a new hobby or going to a new class where it would be really interactive, like a dance class? Maybe you'd shake up your life by learning something new and meeting new people. Even if you never hang out with them outside of class, you'd get that breath of fresh air every week.

Some of these things sound dumb but here are some things I do to provide a little more fun to my life:

-Go to the library and check out oodles of books, audio books, cds, etc.  This is free and adds variety to what I read and listen to.
-I am addicted to podcasts.  I travel a lot during the week and these are so fun to listen to.  Just go to itunes and browse through what they have.  They are free and there are podcasts on just about everything.  Some fun fashiony ones I like are "Lipgloss and Laptops"..."The Budget Fashionista\Shoptalk"..."Savvies"...or they have several podcasts on travel.
-I like to go to places and just people watch...sometimes it is the mall sometimes Starbucks...wherever.  Another free and entertaining activity.
-Have you ever tried "Meetup.com" or something like that?  I have met up with other moms just to chat over coffee.  I don't think you are mom necessarily(?) but they do have meetup groups of all kinds.
-Since we all like shopping maybe try to seek out some fun flea markets, consignment stores and boutiques to browse in your area...
-How about a solo roadtrip?  Just hop in the car (with a latte and a your podcasts) and drive to another town or city and start exploring?  All it takes is a tank of gas...
-Another thing I like to do is to go to look at model homes or open houses just for decorating ideas and such...even if it is just for dreaming...

I totally understand what you are talking about...sometimes you just need some excitment in your life.  Hope this helps!

I highly recommend taking a class at a community college. I've taken photography classes, drawing classes, volleyball, and writing classes. They are really inexpensive and I've always met really nice people in the classes.

You could also work out more, join a gym, take exercise classes, etc.

Thanks, everyone. These are all good suggestions. I had been shying away from taking a class (I dance, and I'm in class 3-4 times a week), but as I think about it, a more interactive class could be really fun. I also like the idea of a spontaneous road trip. Any other ideas? (sorry to be needy - I feel like I need to stock up on ideas)

-Go to the movies! I usually prefer going alone and this is the best time of year for movies with all the Oscar hopefuls being released.
-Slightly cheaper option: make your own movie nights at home. Rent an old favorite that you haven't seen in ages, a tv show you weren't able to watch, or a bunch of films by the same director or with the same star so you can have an ongoing series to look forward to.
-Not sure where you live but are there any museums or art galleries in the area? You could try to go to some gallery openings. Usually they have food or drinks and I find them to be fairly low-pressure socially since you can just wander around and look at the paintings while subtly people watching.
-Window shop somewhere expensive. Sometimes this makes me a bit depressed! but other times I really enjoy wearing something that makes me feel fabulous, throwing on my sunglasses, and popping in and out of boutiques or going all through a department store.

It isn't low-cost, but you can go to a fairly fancy restaurant by yourself and order an early dinner or just appetizers at the bar - it's more social than a table since you can chat with the bartenders and the happy hour crowd. It would be a good way to try a restaurant you can't get anyone to take you to, and dinner for one isn't a huge expense.

I don't know where you live, but sometimes it's fun to do the "touristy" things in your area, either for the sheer lameness of it or the actual value. Bonus points if you venture onto public transportation.

Volunteer for something you support - it's campaign season right now, or look for a beach cleanup or graffiti removal crew, or take shelter dogs for walks, or sign up to be an usher at the community theater. This is a great way to meet people with the same interests.

On that note, you could check into becoming a big sister or a tutor for kids. Or since you dance, maybe find out if the local park and rec department or afterschool program is looking for a dance teacher.
