Water marks on marble

We have some water marks on our marble countertops in our master bathroom.  Any suggestions on how to get them out?

I did a search and found two possible solutions:

  • Rub toothpaste on it
  • Water rings can generally be removed by using white vinegar and water.  The following proportions should not hurt the marble.
1/2 cup white vinegar to 1 quart of water.
Wet a clean cotton cloth with this solution. Leave the cloth on the ring for an hour or two. Inspect to see if the ring has lessoned by rinsing and drying. Check to see that the luster on the marble counter top is not being harmed. Repeat as necessary, that is if the counter top is OK.
Not sure if any of them actually work from personal experience though.

Thanks!  I had heard about the vinegar solution, but I'm a little scared about putting vinegar on the marble...although 1/2 cup vinegar in a quart of water is very dilute.  The toothpaste idea is interesting...I will try it happy.gif

They also sell commercial cleaners at home improvement stores. They're maybe $6 or $7 a bottle, and some come in two-packs with a bottle of sealer as well.  Has your countertop been sealed recently?

I have no solution, but someone asked Martha Stewart this question in something I read recently. Martha said she had decided to just accept that her marble was going to get marks and she has enjoyed it and the character of the imperfections since she chose not to worry about it. And you know if Martha says it, it must be true. . .wink.gif

Yes, I've had my marble sealed...it's a new house (brand new construction) and we just moved in in July. I have the special marble cleaner but it's not helping. So I guess I need to suck it up and enjoy my not-so-perfect-anymore marble as Martha said..... hmm.gif

The only reason I ask is because we installed new 'pre sealed' granite in our bathroom and had to use the spray-sealer on it twice before it was sealed enough to bead water that landed on it.  Before that a little hand soap dripped on it and sat for a few hours before I cleaned it up and it left a stain - I had to do 3 ot 4 different applications of the cleaner to get it out.  Granite is supposed to be re-sealed every 6 months, don't know if it's different for marble?

There should be directions for how to make a poultice online.  Something like a paste of baking soda and some liquid (water?  vinegar?) put on the stain and covered with plastic wrap until dries ...
