blackberry vs iphone

I need a new phone and am debating between these two. Does anyone have any insight/ pros/ cons on either?

My gut is telling me to go with the blackberry, but I can tell DH really wants to go the iphone route.

I love my blackberry pearl! No experience with the iphone, though.

do you know what kind of plan you have for yours? The data plans look so confusing- I'm, not sure which ones will give me what I need. I travel to a lot of out of the way places for work and would love to have access to my email and to some sort of limited web browsing...

it almost looks like the iphone ends up being cheaper in the long run? ($300 more upfront for the phone, but almost $40 cheaper per month for service?)

I have an iPhone and love it. My boss has a Blackberry and the other day we were out to lunch with some foreign colleagues and wanted to mapquest a town in Germany. My iPhone trumped the Blackberry with speed and info. Hers wasn't even loaded and we were already finished mapquesting with the iPhone.

Other than that, I don't really have personal experience with the Blackberry, but I definitely love the iPhone. The only thing that is annoying is that I can't send or receive picture text messages; they all go via email. But, rumor has it, that Apple is working on this, along with other upgrades. I highly recommend the iPhone (or anything Apple, for that matter). smile

It depends on your carrier. I switched to Tmobile because Verizon was SO expensive for data service. Through Tmobile, I pay $39.99 for 350 minutes + $19.99 for unlimited data service. Once my husband switches to Tmobile, we will actually barely pay more for data+minutes than we were paying at Verizon for minutes only.

I didn't even consider the iphone because AT&T has really bad reception in my area, and it is really expensive. But I know lots of people who have both phones, and love them both.

I have neither at the moment but used to have a blackberry and a friend/coworker has the iphone.  His main complaint:  Service, ATT&T has bad reception in his area so I would def. check into that before committing to AT&T.  Other than that the easy web access, voicemail as audio files, and lots of other cool features trumps the blackberry.

One other thing to consider...depending on your work.  With the blackberry you have a built-in email utility for outlook and it syncs automatically with your work email server.  This doesn't exist yet for the iphone.  So you either have to use web email or use a work-around.  My friend found some work-around out there.  If you're not worried about work email then it's not a big deal!

Hope that made sense!

thanks for the input guys! I wont be using it to do actual work, and we have ATT now and have never had a problem with service. The iphone is looking more and more appealing, but I'm still not quite ready to commit. $400 seems like a lot to drop on a phone....

But that's just it! It's not just a phone. It does so much more than that and that's why I love it. As much as I hate those stupid iPhone commercials that are running right now about people in situations where they used their iPhone to 'save' them or whatever (backstage blogging, looking up someone's name on their wedding site- I'm sure you've seen them), they really are true. I've had stuff like that happen and it's been great to have the iPhone. I definitely like it much better than any other phone I've had.

kenzie- i know it's not just a phone. But all I really *need* is a phone and a way to check email, so its kind of "do I want a $400 awesome gadget that will entertain me for hours or a $100 sort of cool phone and a $300 pair of shoes" wink.gif

also, do you ever feel really conspicuious (sp) or "dorky" with the iphone? probabaly a stupid question, but I have like 0% self esteem lately. I see people all over with blackberries, so i wouldn' stand out quite as much.

Haha. That question made me laugh. No, I don't feel conspicuous or dorky. I could care less, though, really. It actually has started a few conversations with random strangers more than once. People are really curious about it and they aren't afraid to ask. But it's cool. I've met some interesting people, thanks to my iPhone. smile

And for the record, I did not buy it for myself. It was a birthday present from SO. As much as I love techy gadgets, I usually spend my money on shoes or clothes, too.

I too am considering the iphone, Kenzie, do you find it is heavy when talking on the phone? Or do you just use a bluetooth?

FP, the weight doesn't bother me at all. It's not heavy. I would recommend a cover for it, though, since it's kind of slippery. PS-- I posted this from my phone. smile.gif

I am on my third blackberry and highly, highly recommend it.  The phone is light, the data package and enterprise capability is awesome (and not available with the iPhone) and blackberry has worked out all the kinks.  If you want to go iphone, wait for 2nd generation... 2nd gen will work out the bugs, screen color issues, and lack of true GPS (which is available on the Blackberry curve).  True GPS includes point by point directions WITH receiver...

All this being said, despite the denials, google is coming out with a phone... if you can wait, it will in all likelihood trump the iphone and the blackberry, so I would wait for that!!biggrin

I have the Blackberry 8830 World Edition Smartphone.  I'm happy with it for the most part except for 3 very annoying things: 1) it freezes up quite a bit, requiring me to take the battery out to reset it. 2) if i have it in a small purse and the buttons press up against it, it will either send previous text messages or even call random people in my phone book. 3) the internet can be very slow at times.  Also, the ring, even at its loudest, is not that loud, so I often don't hear it ring if it's in my purse and I'm not in a very quiet area.

I wanted to add one more thing. If you aren't going to use the features that come with either the iphone or blackberry then I would stick with a regular phone. They can be difficult to learn at first, but the features are why you buy them. If you won't use them then I wouldn't even bother getting one bc you can get the same functionality from a cheaper phone that will be just as nice. Plus, you have to pay for the data packages and IMO you should use them if you are paying for them.
