Inappropriate laughing during a serious drama - a movie review of sorts
Permalink Closed

So, my good friend and I went to see Things We Lost in the Fire tonight. I was excited because I like Benicio del Toro and I heard good things about his performance.

My friend and I always get into these hysterical laughing fits over the smallest things. We used to work together at a snooty, uptight company and took turns at reception and sometimes we would be laughing so hard that neither one of us could answer the phones. Seriously, we were reprimanded for it several times. We would start cracking up and to avoid getting in trouble, he would run back to his desk and call me at reception and we would just quietly laugh into the phone for ten minutes straight.

Tonight, something struck us as funny not long after the movie started,  and for the next two hours we spent trying hard not to laugh out loud. I would try to calm down and concentrate on the movie and would lean into him accidentally and feel his arm shaking with silent laughter, which would start me off all over again. I'm sure we were very annoying. The minute the movie ended, we finally could laugh out loud and it was such a relief. We were crying and laughing the whole way home. He almost crashed into a parked car. I actually feel physically ill now.

So, Things We Lost in the Fire is a touching drama and is officially the movie that made me laugh harder than I ever have before. I don't know if that's a recommendation or not...and for the life of me I cannot remember what made us laugh so hard.

lol, you crack me up.

that happened to me + friend during "i am sam." we were imagining spicoli in that role, but afterwards, we felt like we were going to hell for laughing at something so serious.

i know someone who can't help but laugh at heavy-handed movies that sucker punch your emotions (i.e. music swells! cry now!). i, on the other hand, sob almost every time (and then hate myself for being played by hollywood)

Yeah, I Am Sam is funny. So is Nell.

One of the things that made us laugh so hard is my friend can't understand why I think Benicio is hot. Of course, he plays a junkie in this movie so he wasn't looking his best and my friend was just like looking at the screen and looking at me like "Are you for real?"

I remember seeing My Life, that heartwrenching movie and commercial for camcorders with Michael Keaton. It was so tragic and grown men were bawling out loud. I knew I could either laugh or cry, so I chose to laugh, which pissed off my weeping brother sitting next to me.

I also went to see that cheesy asteroid movie Deep Impact. At one point, I started to tear up and I was thinking "How dare you, Hollywood!"
