How much Savings Bond should I get my goddaughter?
Permalink Closed

My niece is being baptized this weekend, I am one of two Godmothers.  I already split the price of the baby's dress.  I want to give a savings bond but am unsure of how much to buy.  Supposedly you buy a certain amount and once it matures it will be worth double.

I just attended a wedding and am low this month on money but of course I don't want to be cheap with my niece.  Should I do $200?  Is that too much/little?  Has anyone ever given a savings bond as a gift?

I would probably do $100. $200 seems like a lot when you are short on cash. Basically don't do more than what you can comfortably afford. There will be many other opportunities where you will be able to purchase Savings Bonds for her.

I've received $50 savings bonds before and it's nice that it turns into $100 in a few years (or like a decade I think). I think any amount is fine and inflation for the next few years is expected to be low, so it's certainly not going to lose a ton of value (I'm an econ major so inflation kind of factors into everything I do). smile
