I dye my hair darker but now I have dark roots?

I dye my hair a darker brown a couple times a year. I usually only go a shade or two darker, so I try to wait as long as I can between colorings to be kind to my hair. Plus, there isn't a whole lot of difference to honestly I go a few months without remembering to freshen it up because my roots aren't really obvious!

I noticed this weekend that I need to dye my hair again. It was looking lighter than I like (although at a trade show, I was randomly asked if I was the goth girl of the company, so maybe it's darker than I realize!) So I was inspecting it in the mirror. But then I noticed that I actually have dark roots. Which is odd, because the only coloring I do to my hair is to make it darker - so if I had real "roots" from dying my hair, they should be lighter.

Does anyone know what is going on? I don't spend a whole lot of time in the sun, because obviously I'm at work all day. I haven't changed anything about my haircare routine in months and months. The only thing I changed, about 6 months ago, is the mousse I use - but the package says it protects from UV rays, anyway, so I wouldn't think it would be sun damage.

All color fades, so I imagine it's just really faded, perhaps lighter than your natural color, or maybe your natural color just gives off a sheen (like highlights) so that it "looks" lighter than the color.  I dunno, really, but good luck figuring it out.

My roots are darker than my hair color, when it's natural. Only when it grows out a little and gets some sun exposure does it start to lighten up. If I were to shave all my hair off, I'd bet my hair would start out darker than usual and lighten up as it grew out.
