Hair color / $$$ / pricing questions

My haircut is $55. A partial highlight would be $125. This is a big reason why I don't get highlights! smile.gif I go to a great stylist who is luckily at the cheapest pay level at my salon (the prices double to go to the "expert" stylists), which is a nice (but not the nicest) place in the area where I live.

I always pay 20% tip no matter what the bill is. I also leave around $5 for the shampoo person.

I think it entirely depends on where you live,

The place I went to last charged $120 for half a head of highlights without blowdry or cut, and this place is known for being a cheap spot in town (Chelsea, NYC).

I am sick of the overpriced hair services around here. It shouldn't cost $10K a year to maintain a style and color.

I go to a great girl now who I'd say charges average for the area (Los Angeles). She's sort of off-the-beaten path and charges $230 for a full head of highlights and a cut (meaning lopping 10 inches off). When I get partial highlights done and my roots touched up, she charges $125. I spend the $125 every 8-10 weeks, get the full $230 done every 6 months, and free bang trims every three weeks. She shampoos my hair herself. I tip around 20-25% when I go and I usually give that in cash to her since I know she never has cash in her wallet.

I went to an "expert" stylist once (recommended through Daily Candy) and I paid $375 for full highlights and a haircut! Plus, I never got compliments on my hair...it was way too much to spend for a mediocre hairstyle.

I seriously wish I had less hair sometimes, so I wouldn't spend so much more in products and salon services.

I live in Kansas City, and  pay $80 for full highlights and $30 for a cut, and I tip 20%.  I think partial highlights are $60 with my stylist.

I totally agree w/you now.  Because the hairdresser I was talking about started charging me more when she moved to a nicer, more upscale look salon.  I also tried out a new hairdresser this weekend in the "old town" of the city I live in and she only charged me $85 for a full head of highlights, color, cut & style.  I was happy to tip her 20%!  For what I paid my old hairdresser, I can now do my hair, and still have more than enough money for a set of nails and a spa pedi!  Plus....I have gotten so many compliments since last week!

Mine charges $125 for cut and highlights, I believe it's only half-head highlights.
