Hair color / $$$ / pricing questions
Permalink Closed

What do you girls get done to your color (partial highlights, all over color, etc.) and how much does it cost you?

I've been getting partial highlights for about a year now and it costs around $120. I've decided it's too much money for only half of my hair getting highlighted. I want to start looking around for new places but I'm not sure if my expectations are accurate when it comes to price.

Also, can you do an all over blonde color instead of highlights? All over color is less expensive and it's basically what I want, but I've never had anything but highlights for blonde and all over for darker colors. Ideas?

That's a lot of money for half a head of highlights.  My hairdresser charges $180 for a full head of highlights, cut, and blow out.  I just stopped getting all over highlights so I could save money and instead just get a color (roots touch up).  Not only is it better for your hair, but a lot cheaper.  The color is $50, the cut (if I get one that appt) is $30, and a blow out is $30.  After the last blow out I've decided I style my hair better than my hairdresser, so will probably just blow myself out next time (they let you borrow a station and I've seen plenty of women doing this there).   If I weren't blonde I would try it at home.

Is $120 just for highlights or does that include a haircut, too? I paid between $140-160 for highlights and a haircut. This weekend, I had my hair dyed brown and got it cut and that cost $130.

Also, I am sure you can go all blonde. I don't know if it would cost more or not. I've only ever done that at home during my experimental teen days.

I've been meaning to ask the same question.

The last time I paid a visit to my hairdresser she charged me $180 and that included all over highlights (which includes bleach highlights and lightening my base color with regular hair color), cut and blowout. I thought it was a lot and I havent been back since. I swear I paid no more than $120 when I started going to her 5 yrs ago and and everytime I've gone to her ever since I slipped out that I got a promotion at work, she's charged me $20 more each visit.

IMO if I'm going to pay close to $200 every other month for my hair, it better look fantabulous, and it just hasn't. I'm afraid to go anywhere and now my roots are embarrasingly long and grown out. I'm curious as what other pay for blonde highlights and color, I could sacrifice the cut (I know a lady) and blowout if I could find the right person for a resonable price.

I live in NW Arkansas and go to a pretty nice place. Our cost of living, as you can imagine, is less than where a lot of you live. I pay $85 for a partial, cut, and blowout.  Oh and my glass of wine or well, sometimes, two. biggrin

Hmmm... my partial highlights does not include a cut. I go to a different stylist for cuts. I'm definitely thinking I'm paying too much. I want a nice salon and good talent and all that but seriously - it's too much money every month!

I live in a big city and go to a trendy, for lack of a better word, place. I like them and I trust my stylist. It definitely costs more than some places but it is a lot less than really fancy places. I just went dark in order to save money.

Okay, I found a new place that will do partial highlights and a cut for $100 and the girl has 3 years of experience. It's a Bumble and Bumble salon and they train every Thursday to learn new techniques. They get good reviews online so here goes. I'm feeling exceedingly guilty for getting a cut from these guys since I usually go to my favorite stylist (not the same salon that does the $$$ highlights) and she does a great job. But these guys will do a combo and it will save me time, money, etc. Eek. Stylist guilt!

I live outside of Cincinnati, and my hair lady is really well priced (but better than anyone else I've gone to). I got highlights once, and they were $60. Of course, just getting a haircut and blowout is only $25 from her, so she really is a bargain.

Mine is the same - 120 - 130 for cut and partial color

Mine are pretty cheap , but my hairdresser loves me and is a friend so I guess that helps!

My hair cost $45 for color and cut. She used to charge me $80 about a year ago, but I think because I refered so many people to her that now she barely charges me at all.

Last time I went in, I paid $80 for partial highlights, a haircut, and a blowout. I live in Milwaukee, and went to not the nicest-looking place, but the girl's super nice and does a good job. Plus, she gave me a 25% student discount. I'm not sure how much it would have been without the discount.

$120 is too much for partial highlights. I just got highlights and a cut and together they were both $120 ($40 for a cut, $80 for highlights). Ask around, see where your friends go, or just straight up call salons and ask what their pricing is (or look online).

I pay $120 for a partial highlight, haircut and blowout. I also have three different colors she uses for the highlights and then a wash on top to even it out and make it look natural.

Ok...I have another question in regards to this....if you pay over $100 to have your hair done...do you still tip your hairdresser? For example...if I just paid $180 I would have to add at least $30 more? I'm breaking the bank with just $180 alone! I'm wondering what others do and whats the proper *etiquette*.

I pay between $140-$180 depending on what I'm having done at the time (always some kind of color and highlight combo and cut/style).  I tip between $10-$15 cause I think adding $20-$30 to that is a lot to ask.

Proper etiquette is 20% I believe.  I think that if you are willing to pay for a pricey haircut/color you obviously appreciate the service and should tip accordingly.  However, this is just my opinion.  I have never worked in a tip related environment so maybe someone who has been a hairdresser (Erin??) could answer this better.

I agree with this 100%.  I understand that tipping for hair appts is 20% - 25%.  It's a lot, but I think tips should always be considered in the price of the service.  Plus, I always give the shampoo girl $5 - $7, depending on how much she has to do for me.

i pay between $120-130 for a partial weave (bleach & tone, though which may make a diff) and $160 for a full weave these prices include a cut and style. i tip 20% unless i'm with the one salon where i see the owner and then i don't tip her b/c she is a friend and technically, from what i understand, you aren't supposed to tip the owner.

i see 3 different stylists each in different size of towns and they are all on par for the same price.

I feel kind of cheap now ashamed.gif But I guess I should add that I have another agreement worked out with my hairdresser and she gets something from me in addition to her tip. Plus I send her a lot of referrals.
