Runners? Arch pain?
Permalink Closed

Hi All,

I've been training for about 3 months for my first half marathon (sooo not a natural runner), and so far it's been tough, but I was excited about how far I'd come! This week I left for one of my shorter weekday runs and my arches started KILLING me. It felt like something was about to tear. Has anyone had any experience with this or does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I stopped running because I didn't want to make anything worse, but now I'm freaking out because I don't know if I'll be able to finish these last couple weeks of training. (The schedule I was on was really designed just to get you across the finish line smile.gif)

Any thoughts at all would be appreciated!

I get the same pain once in a while. Usually only in one foot though. I just stay off of it as much as I can and it just goes away.

Yeeeeah, that's kind of what I was afraid of, but it seems like the most logical thing to do. Now I'm just worried about being able to finish the race in a few weeks if I take some time off, but I guess not finishing and being healthy is better than not finishing and making it worse.

Thanks :)

YES! That is one of the biggest problems I have when I run. Arch support is very important. If you have a running store, the kind where they watch you run and fit you for shoes, I would go there. Having the right shoe makes a world if difference, They will definitely know what your issue is. There are also arch support things that look like an ace bandage that just goes around your arch that help me. I can never remember the terms they use because as long as they fix me I forget.
I think you will be fine to do the marathon if you get the right support. Good Luck and congratulations.

I wonder if it could be plantar faciitis?

My husband, his half-sister, and his dad have it. He had to get special inserts made at Foot Solutions and buy good shoes (he has a pair of Brooks, some people get Asics, others). He also had to ice his feet and stay off them a lot.

I would definitely recommend going to a running store and have them look at your stride. Make sure you bring in your current running shoes - they can look at the wear patterns to help determine if you pronate or supinate...

You may also want to get an OTC insole - the green SuperFeet provided me with good support before I bit the bullet and got custom orthotics for my running shoes.

And remember RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. I'd toss in some Ibuprofen for a few days to help with the inflammation as well.

If you're going to take Ibuprofen, you might as well do it right. There are two factors to get the most benefit - dosage and duration. Unless you're a really tiny person or have stomach issues, the best way to take it is 800 mg x 3 per day, with food (That's 4 pills as Ibuprofen comes in 200 mg).

The other big mistake most people make is treating ibuprofen like asprin or Tylenol, which are pain relievers. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory, which will help your muscles. So continue taking the Ibuprofen for at least two consecutive days to get the full benefit of reducing micro-swelling of tissue. It will provide a great relief.

Good luck with the half!! Such a fun distance...

Thanks so much for the responses.....I think I'm going to go with some combination of all of the above. I went by the running store yesterday and picked up some arch straps, definitely hitting up the ibprofen, and took yesterday off/iced them. I might try an easy shorter run today....see how that goes?

pollyjean, after consulting Dr. Google, it sounded like plantar fasciitis was a possibility. We'll see how today goes....

Thanks again!
