I am fugging the Sartorialist.

OK, so here is my issue with the Sartorialist. I like a lot of the looks he shoots, and I appreciate that he has an eye for interesting and unusual and offbeat looks that most people wouldn't be able to put together or pull off. But sometimes I think he is just flat-out wrong. To wit:

SweetSpot.jpg
lovely girl, but I think she looks godawful. She's wearing an ugly, shapeless, unflattering, cheap-looking, ill-fitting sack, carrying an ugly, nondescript bag, and wearing ugly shoes. And his caption on the shot is "Does it get more perfect?" To which I say: WHAT?

Also this one.

Tat

Again, pretty woman, and I'm sure she's got a gorgeous figure, but it's impossible to tell because this outfit is so incredibly unflattering that it's making my brain hurt. It's making her look three feet wide. And a good 40 pounds heavier than she actually is. What on earth is going on here?!

I totally agree. I usually love his pictures, but he has some real doozies too.

I agree.  I saw that picture last night and thought "Maybe she's a friend of his..." cause I just wasn't seeing it.

Yeah, I saw the second one yesterday and I thought to myself, "So not flattering." Maybe she saw herself in the photo and realized the same thing so he is actually doing these people a favor...

Also, there have been lots of times I've seen him post photos of beautiful women wearing what I considered to be not especially striking or original outfits, so I think he's very susceptible to the influence of the overall charm of his subject. And those pictures are interesting in their own right, for sure, because he seems drawn to very fresh, engaging, genuinely lovely women, usually with gorgeous smiles, but in those cases the photo is more about beauty than fashion per se. I think the top photo is definitely an instance of that!

That was my reaction when I saw it too!  Sometimes I won't be wowed by something he posts but usually after reading his little blurb I can understand why the outfit caught his eye but I couldn't believe this one was posted with just that caption, as if it is so obviously a great look.

Wow, there's a lot going on w/ that second outfit. That's one of the ugliest skirts I've ever seen.

Okay, don't hate me, but I have to say I enjoy them! I totally agree that those outfits are figure-unflattering. But despite the fact that I would never wear them, the girls are so cute and I love the originality of the Sartorialist women! That's one of the things that I like about reading the Sartorialist -- it gives me inspiration from people who are you sometimes far more "out there" than I am when it comes to fashion.

2nd. sometimes i appreciate a little over-the-topness...and i have been known to wear something completely unflattering just because i love it.

I think a lot of the crap he puts up is just....crap. I quit reading it because it made me so confused.

That was my reaction too.  Also, Stacy and Clinton would toss this one in the garbage:

I'm with littlebean and erin. I agree that the clothes are not flattering to those women's figures.  But I do believe it's a whole package kind of thing. The people Scott photographs definitely have style, whether it's quirky, beautiful, or just ridiculous. Every ounce of them is an expression of that style, from the fabric on their bodies to their posture and facial expressions.
I don't care about seeing just another person wearing beautiful clothes. I want to see beautiful photographs of people who feel beautiful.  That's what inspires me.

I have puzzled over the plaid outfit since Scott put it up. So unflattering. There was a time when such outfits were labeled "fashion victim." As to the second--well, you are right--definitely someone should turn her in to WNTW.
