Which knockoffs? Or should I get the Fryes?
Permalink Closed

I was bidding on some Frye Villager boots on Ebay, but I've sadly just been outbid and it's getting to a price that would be dumb to buy off of Ebay. I am so in love with the villagers.

I don't know if I've ever paid more than $40 for shoes in my life. Even that was a stretch. I think it's because I'd rather have a lot of fun variety that wears out faster than be forced to wear the same couple pair of good shoes all the time.

But I know boots cost more, and better quality will last longer, and I did a lot of overtime last weekend so I have a bit of money to play around with. I found the Frye Villagers on Bluefly and could get them down to about $110 with a coupon code. But even $110 is a lot for me.

Should I get one of these knockoffs, or are the real Villagers worth the investment? Do you think they're classic enough to last me through at least a few years?

The Freyes $110:

Newport News knockoffs $40:

Bamboo ($40):

Rebels ($92):

I'm personally a huge fan of the villagers and I think Frye's are worth the investment. However, I completely understand if you aren't comfortable w/ the price. I paid $149 for my villagers, and I admit that I haven't worn them nearly enough, but I figure I'll wear them for many more years. I'm sure I'll be okay w/ the price eventually.

If you decide to go w/ the knockoffs, I think the first pair (Newport News) look a lot nicer than the others.

Did you look into the pair smash bought a couple weeks ago?

I did look into the ones smash bought, I actually liked them a bit better, but the lowest I can find them for is about $150

Of those choices, I mos' def like the NN ones best. I even prefer the chocolatey color, and can see wearing them with more than just casual outfits. I'm not a fan of the last two.

I think I decided on the NN ones. I'm concerned that the faux leather will look tacky, but the more I think about it, it doesn't make sense to splurge on the Fryes. They're *beautiful,* but I don't think I'll get quite as much use out of them as I would like to believe I would. Sigh.

thanks everyone... I liked the NN ones best as a runner-up, so it's good to know my judgment isn't completely off smile.gif

ETA: Is there still a newport news link I can click through on ST? I can't see it, I don't know if I'm going blind?

I think the Newport News ones are a great choice style-wise. Will you do a review when you get them? I'm curious to hear how they fit.

newport news and spiegel decided to no longer spend ad dollars on affiliate advertising and dumped us all. I used to buy things at NN, but no longer - I'm on a personal boycott since they decided to dump their affiliate advertisers.

Thanks FP! I *am* an 8 1/2! I ordered the NN ones before I saw your post, but I'm watching them on Ebay and hopefully they won't be sold before I get the NN ones and see how they look smile.gif

I like the Fryes, but they didn't look right on me. Too bulky or something for my chicken legs. I like the ones FP posted (btw, FP, what's the style name so I can stalk them in an 8??wink).

These are also really cute in person -- Cali has them and I prefer them to the Villagers. They are $150 on Zappos, but they are $53 on onlineshoes.com in an 8 1/2, so you could get a price match:
MIA LaciMia "Laci"

If the Newport News ones are nice, please let us know!

The style name is Koolbreeze.  Gotham City (link at top of ST page) has them in black.
