speaking of silly dog questions....a gross one...

This morning my dog ate cat poop!!!  I went to let her out and the neighbors cat was in the yard.  She chased the cat out of the yard and then returned to where the cat had been sitting...and ate it's poop!!!!!  I was mortified.  I've never seen her do this before, and she's never tried to eat her own.  We pick up the yard daily so she really doesn't have a chance.  Is this normal?

Is there anything I can do?

Yes, it's disgusting, but it's completely normal.  My dogs are constantly trying to raid my cat's litter box.  It's so gross.  I call her litter box the "snack bar".  bleh

Ohhh yeah. Vivy loved to do that when I lived at the scary apartments. Be sure you watch her...that's how she got Geardia (sp?) and that WAS NOT fun. I never knew a little dog could make such a disgusting...ummm you know. So I can only imagine what it would be like to clean up after Lola....

My dog eats her poop all the time. It's disgusting, but I can't figure out what to do about it, even the bad-tasting-poop supplements don't work

Anyway, it's normal but it goes without saying that you should keep her from doing it if you can. I don't think this once will hurt her, though....hopefully.

very normal. My dog eats cat poop, other dog's poop, horse poop, rabbit poop...basically, if it's poop, he'll eat it.

It's pretty unusual for a dog to eat its own poop, but cat poop is a dog delicacy. It can be particularly dangerous if it is litter box poop because the litter isn't easily digested. If you dog knows "leave it" that's usually good for deter them from poop eating.

My dog has learned to be really sneaky about it. He knows that I won't let him eat the little treasures, so he waits until I'm not looking.

My dog loves cat poop! I have a baby gate blocking the room where the litter boxes are. I read something about cat poop being really high in protein and that's why dogs love it.

Haha my sister's dog does this too. He sneaks up the stairs so slowly and quietly. It's hilarious. It's not all bad though. Cheaper than an automatic cleaning litterbox. wink.gif

My old dog used to do this too. So sick. The worst though was when she would pull a used maxi-pad out of the trash and go outside and eat it. Oh sorry, was that TMI? wink.gif

Dude, dogs are gross. A neighbor of mine had two big rotties and a couple of goats. Not only did they play-fight each other but the rotties considered the goat's poops to be yummers. The neighbor, in fact, calls the goat poops "dog M&M's".

You become so immune to this stuff when you own a dog, it's almost funny. One time I had some friends staying with me. I guess one of them had their period. They left Monday morning and I followed them out because I had to be at work. In my rush, I didn't check to make sure all doors that should be closed were closed or grab the trash, etc. When I got home, my dog greeted me with an innocent look on his face and a used maxi pad stuck to his beard. bleh I wonder how long it was there. Did he just give up trying to get it off?

That's too funny.  My youngest lab has dined on many a treat from the bathroom trash can.  That's where the good stuff it.  My oldest dog got into the trash when my 6 year old was a baby, and spent who knows how long on the front lawn of our house dining on one of her diapers for all the neighbors to see, plus he had drug all the "good trash" up to the front long as well.  This was in Italy in the middle of our beautiful neighborhood.  They probably figured this was typical fare for American dogs!

this is too funny. dogs do love to eat the gross things. so far stella has not wanted to eat poop, but she did get very interested in rooting through the trash can the last time i had my period.

my childhood dog, pepper, once came out of the woods behind my parents house proudly dragging the half rotten carcus of a possum. which she had eaten part of, and which she eventually threw up all over the driveway!

Hmm, I guess I'll refrain from telling the one about the condom...

Eeeew! My stomach is turning! I do remember now that our dog loves the neighbor's horse poop! She'd have a big brown face right afterwards! Thankfully the horses are gone now.

We had a dog who constantly cleaned the litter box for us. I used to tell my roomate that the dog had sprinkles on his nose again, which ment he had been in the cat box again. My dog now doesnt do that but horse and cow poop are irresistable. To the point that when my friend, who has horses comes over wearing her boots, my dog will actually grab her leg with her paws hold her leg and lick her boots for 10 minutes. It is hilarious and gross at the same time.

i'm supposed to be revising, but this thread is too funny! one of my dogs did have a bit of a phase of eating poop (but he did stop at some point, so maybe your dog will too?). i remember once when my mum's friend was at our house and had brought her son who was probably about 6 years old. he was so upset when he saw our dog eating poop that he threw up hmm
