I know gel nails have been discussed before but I have some more questions.

A few months ago I went to get gel nails put on and they said that because my nails weren't long enough they applied a tip, acrylic, and then gel.  Really? Is this how it's done for everyone without nails?

Today, I went to a different place since a friend told me acrylic didn't need to be used. Sure enough this place used a tip and applied gel about 3 times or so. Well, two hours later after I went home and showered and got ready to go shopping (I had an early appointment) the thumb nails broke off and several looked cracked. I thought maybe it was the clear polish that looked cracked. At the mall another nail broke off as I was walking. Then at Ikea I went to pull out my credit card and another nail broke off.

How long do your gel nails last? What process is used when they apply them?

I called and am going back in tomorrow, but what can I do to make them last? Or to make sure they are being applied right? Any tips will be of great help. Thanks.

There are a few different ways I have seen them done- the way you have described (most common in my opinion) or they can just put the gel directly on your regular nail. It doesn't add length, but it will add strength and give them the appearance of healthier, nicer nails.

I have had both. The first way is the way I have had them done the most often. I usually went in every few weeks to get a fill and then every 2 mths or so for a whole new set. I didn't usually have a problem with them breaking.

The second way is just like having your natural nails so they generally don't break off that bad.

I'm sure there are some other methods out there too.

I had gel nails for the past 5 years, and just recently took them off.  Basically, they applied a tip to the tip of my real nail (by the way, it totally doesn't matter how long/short your nails are - they usually cut mine all the way down), and then they put the clear gel overlay over my real nail and tip.  I would then go and get them filled every 2-3 weeks as they grew out.  There was no need for them to put acrylic on and then gel, and they should certainly last you w/out cracking and breaking.  I'd go somewhere else to have them done if I were you - it doesn't sound like they know how to do them.  HTH!

yeah- that doesn't sound right. i've found alot of places don't know how to do them properly- they should definitely last you 2-3 weeks.
