GRRR! Someone stole our checks!
Permalink Closed

I mailed a couple checks to our bank to be deposited (it's in another state, where we used to live) 2 weeks ago.  Normally it doesn't take more than 3 or 4 days to clear, so I called at the beginning of this week - hadn't received them.  Just got word from my husbands job that their check to him cleared on 7/10, but not into our account.  Not even at our bank.  They even emailed me the digital representation of it, and my original endorsement of *For Deposit Only**myaccountnumber* is still intact.  I'd thought that the point of putting that there is so that if someone found them they'd have to forge/wash them to cash them.  Apparently not.

I. am. so. pissed.  Can anyone who works at a bank or knows how these things work give me any advice?  My guess is that wherever it was cashed wasn't a big financial insitution, since there's no bank name on the back.  But wouldn't you get in big trouble if you cashed a check that said deposit only to someone who's name is not on the check?!  Mr. Elle's employer is looking into it with their bank to see where the check cashed, but then what?  I'm hoping the other checks where cashed at the same time/place, but I'm sure that won't be the case furious.

Makes me scared to ever send a check to anyone for anything ever again!

That sucks donkey balls. Hopefully the bank will be able to track them. Do you have any recourse with the depositor (whomever gave you those checks, DH's work?) to rewrite you another check or will you maybe never see that money again? I don't have any good advice really. Just commiseration.

Those kind of things happen way more than should. Bank employees are human and humans are rotten rotten people sometimes. My mom was the power-of-attorney for my grandmother and a bunch of rotten kids stole her checks out of our mailbox. They bought a ton of stuff at the local Hot Topic while one of their friend's was working. Stupid ass kids were all just turning 18 though so they eventually got busted hard core- that's a federal offense and not something to mess with. It's one thing to steal checks, but through the mail is a bad bad idea.

Elle, I am so sorry!  I don't know what to say, since I thought the same thing about writing the account number on the back.  How could it even be deposited into another account?

Oooh, that's too bad. Sorry this has happened! I know so many places cash checks besides banks (even Wal-Mart) and lots of those people don't give a rats ass about checking if the checks are legit and if they are being cashed by the right person.

Your husbands employer needs to file a fraud report. They will get their money back in a matter of days and they can reissue your husband a check. You can also contact the bank they cleared through and see what the procedures are for a fraud claim, let me know if you have any other questions. You are protected in this situation though!!
