I've been with US bank for about 4 years and I like it. I just have a free no-frills checking account, and I only get a very teensy bit cash back when I use my visa debit card, but I've also never had any problems so I plan on staying with them. Whenever I've called customer service, they've been very helpful.

I bank with Bank of the West (which I like alot), but Washington Mutual has to be crappiest bank ever. I've had them before too, and ugh. Whenever I can, I tell people to avoid it at all cost.
I think community credit unions are the way to go. I banked with one called Hapo and they were great. They offered free overdraft protection, and free everything else. Right now I bank with Key Bank and I haven't had any problems with them. I just try to stay away from the really big names.
we use citibank at work and i have friends that like bank of america. i cant personally recommend either- i have an M & T account and i've always been extremely happy.
We have ING's Orange Checking Account -- it earns interest just like a savings acct, and you get a debit card with something like $1k in overdraft protection. The only downside is that you have to write checks electronically (they mail them). But we keep a few accts with a local credit union for our car loans, and we just transfer $ if we need to physically write a check.

I have WellsFargo and I've never had a problem with them. I have a free checking account and a cc with them, so any overdrafts automatically go to the cc - no fees or anything. I've had them for about 10 years and been very happy. Another plus is that if there's an error on your online account (a restaurant charged you twice or wrong amount or whatever), you can simply email them and they'll fix it immediately. I deal with them almost exclusively via email when the need arises.
I've also heard good things about ING's Orange Checking Account - although I think some services are slower than at B&M banks (not sure about this).
And again I've heard that local credit unions are very handy too. They especially help when you need to get loans for things - they have good rates, are easier to get, etc.
Hmm, I was also going to suggest a local credit union. Before I moved to Chicago, I used a credit union and they were so easy to work with. All deposited checks cleared very quickly and it was very easy to transfer money between accounts-- I could even transfer money between my BF's and my own personal checking accounts. The only downside is that being in the city, it would be harder to only use the credit union ATM, and then you will get hit up with those charges (although some credit unions don't charge you for using another bank's ATM, you will get charged by that bank).
well, if you use ATM's a lot you may want to think about compass bank , since you can use any ATM for free, they have shitty hours, unless you go to a grocery store branch, but overall I like them ok, and free ATM's are kinda nice
