Razor Burn
Permalink Closed

Ok maybe this is TMI but I just switched from waxign to shaving because I hated the growing in period. So I seem to get terrible razor burn everytime I shave now. I use a new razor every time, the Schick Venus and skintimate womens shaving cream. Can anyone recommend what they use to go burn/bump free? I just want to wear a bikni without hiding! TIA!

Have you tried tend skin yet? It's suppose to work wonders for razor burn. Here is the blurb from Sephora:

Accidentally discovered by a dentist in 1985, this unique formulation was a side effect of medication given to a patient who informed the doctor that something was suddenly clearing his skin of unsightly razor bumps.
Since then, many other uses for Tend Skin have been discovered. Tend Skin will improve the appearance of razor bumps, ingrown hairs, and redness caused by hair removal. Excellent for both women and men, you will see results in 24 hours!

A friend and I were talking about this, she swears the Queen Helene mint julip masque cures them. I think she leaves it on for a while, maybe even overnight.

No matter what I do (aside from waxing), I get red bumps on my bikini line- -even if I use Nair--which totally blows my mind. I have given up. That Tend Skin sounds interesting. I'll anticipate everyone's other answers too.

Curious, I checked out makeupalley for reviews of TendSkin. There are def pros and cons, but check it out.

Years ago, someone suggested that super blue stuff that comes in a jar.  It does not work; and I think the company that sells/manufactures it got fined like $3M for false ad claims.  I tried it.

I read in a magazine that rose water is supposed to help, I haven't tried it though.

From my experience as soon as I started waxing, if I would shave in between appointments, I would always get red and bumps (which never happened before waxing). May I ask what it is you dont like about the growing in period? Again, this is from my experinece, but waxing leaves my hair thinner as it grows back in, and I never get that itchy, prickly feeling I did from shaving. Sorry if thats TMI, but theres not really any other way to say it.

I'm convinced that all women's razors suck. They're all designed around stupid marketing ploys and pretty colors. IMO they are all too rough to shave with. I use men's razors and have had better results. (Softer and smoother and it's not like I have a lot of hair or anything.) I use the men's mach 3 or however you spell it.

As for getting bumps in the bikini area. I use nair and I wait a few hours before I put on underwear. For example, I use nair at night and sleep without undies, so that they don't rub and cause bumps. Also, it seems to help if I don't wear types of undies that cut into my sides in that area. Usually it helps to wear cute boy briefs or something similar, until I need to wear bikini or something.

I've used the Mach 3 for years and it's the best. I've never had good luck with foamy shaving gels or creams but always get great results with ultra creamy type moisturizing body wash.

I'm assuming you're talking about your bikini area, not your entire leg, right? Try applying 1% hydrocortisone cream right after you shave (or any method of hair removal, even tweasing, face or body). You can get it at any drug or grocery store. Don't be worried if it says "anti-itch" on the box. It works for any skin irritation or inflamation. Avoid using any other lotions in the area until the hydrocortisone has had a chance to work for at least a couple of hours.

This trick works great for me, but it might not be for everyone. I originally read about it in a magazine a few years ago. Good luck.

I totally agree with Roxy on the hydrocortisone cream. I use Target brand (or really any cheap, generic brand) immediatly after I get out of the shower and I never get any bumps.  Then later on, I'll put on TendSkin and that will prevent any ingrown hairs. I usually wait a while to do the TendSkin because it stings a little right after you shave.

Another good product is Bikini Zone. You can get it at Walgreens or CVS and it comes in a gel or cream. I've used this since highschool and its always worked great. You just put it on immediatly after shaving and you don't have to worry about any signs of razor burn. I think it works the same as the hydrocortisone, I just prefer the hydrocotisone because its cheaper and doesn't have a scent.
