please help me pick out living room furniture

I am getting new living room furniture this summer (sofa, loveseat, two recliners, and maybe one more chair).  I honestly don't know I want.  My living room (tv room) is painted a leaf green under the chairrail and off white above.  My house is done in greens, plums, and blues.  I don't want anything too formal and no leather (I have indoor pets).  I am open to almost anything else.  I just have no idea what I want.  My budget is no more than $4000.  Please post what you like.

Have you checked Crate & Barrel? I like a lot of their sofas. By the way, my family and I all have indoor pets, and we've found that (good quality) leather is far more durable than cloth. JMO!

Really?  That is encouraging because I really love leather.  I have a cat and two miniature dachshunds.  How well does leather hold up to claw marks?  My cat really likes to dig into the furniture with his back claws as he is about to fall off the back of the recliner (which he frequently does).  Why he keeps getting up there I will never know.  I just have this horror that within a couple of weeks there will be rips in it from the claws.

my dogs aren't technically allowed on the couch, but they sometimes get up there, and we haven't had any problems. Our couches are analine (sp?) dyed, so tiny scratches don't show up as white. Our ottoman is cheap, and you can totally tell the difference between the two. Some stores also include animal damage in their warranties -- I know ours does.

I don't have any cats, but my mom has one (her cat completely clawed up her upholstered couch), so I will ask her if she has any problems. Her set is custom, from Creative Leather, and it's lovely!

If you have cats I would not suggest leather. I know that good leather stands up to dogs better than cloth but the sharpness of cat claws kills leather, no matter how good the quality is. Cloth gets ruined too but it is much more noticable with leather. We have a large dog and the leather is fine with her but you can really see on the top of the couch where the cats jump on and off. In the other room we have regular upholstered couches and they look much better and are a few years older.

My mother has down filled overstuffed sofas and I love, love them, unfortunately they are a bit out of your (and my) price range. I have had good luck with lazyboy stuff. It really just depends on your personal style. What kind of stuff are you drawn to? Modern, more victorian esque...

yeah, my mom said the cat isn't on the couch often, and when she is, they use blankets for her to sit on. Sorry! Leather is good with dogs, though!smile

Some people have a lot of luck with ultrasuede, but I will never do that again - it just isn't holding up well, from husband damage, not kitty.

There's a pet care show where the guy always says to train a cat, you have to make YOUR idea THEIR idea. Presenting options or alternatives allows them to choose. So when we got new couches, what we did was bring in a carpet-covered thing (it looks like a hollow tree) that is TALLER than the furniture. It became their obsession, so they left the new furniture alone.

Cats always want to be in the highest accessible spot in the room so they can scope for predators and prey. That's why the top of the couch, chair, fireplace mantel, top of the TV or whatever is so desirable. Maybe the solution is just to keep them from being interested in the furniture in the first place.

I will have to disagree.  My neighbors have a Boston Terrier and a Yorkie... their Pottery Barn leather chair looks awful.  cry  Small doggy nails are quite sharp.

Well we own a Chihuahua and all of our furniture is leather and after about 5 years we haven't had any problems. I dont know if its any different with cats though.


But I went to Crate & Barrel and found some ideas. I think if your wall is more of a green then maybe your furniture can be in the blue/gray family and beige then you could use plums and greens as pillows?
