I think tis tacky. If your going to bother rgistering, register for stuff you want. Why ask for something just to return it? People that buy off the registery do it because they know that you'll like the gift....so registering to return is pointless. JMO.

Registering takes into account that setting up a home is a pretty personal thing and you are probably going to want to pick out your own china, appliances, and linens. It prevents you from receiving the toaster you didn't want or need or the ugly dishes from your well-meaning great-aunt. It is supposed to reconcile your desire to pick out your own stuff and your guests' desire to buy you a physical gift. Registering for stuff you don't want so you can return it for money is just disrespectful to everyone. Besides, how are you going to explain to your friends and family why you don't have the plates they gave you that YOU registered for?

I think it's tacky.  Registering for gifts just to return them is a waste of everyone's time and energy. I just think a wedding should be a wedding, not a fundraiser.

I understand that as people get married later in life nowadays and have all the dishes/gadgets they need prior to getting married, registering for gifts is less of a matter of "need" than it used to be.  I personally don't have a problem with contributing to a honeymoon fund, although I could definitely see how it wouldn't fly with some generations and some social circles. If money isn't an issue for the couple and they just want cash for the sake of getting something out of the wedding, then I think the couple should set up a fund where guests contribute to a designated charity. I think that's a far more classy way to handle the issue.
