spelling police - tiny rant
Permalink Closed

I am by no means perfect, but c'mon bluefly... bluefly sent out an email and the subject was "Get Em' While Their Hot!"  *cringe* Don't you think they're a big enough company to at least have someone proofread their e-direct?  I think I was 9 or 10 when I learned the difference between "they're" and "their."  While I'm at it, the Em' -- should be 'Em...

It just perpetuates poor spelling. I also think it's a conspiracy to get on my nerves.wink

*end rant*

smile

I guess it is Monday...

i don't think you're overreacting @ all, b/c that would irk me too.  i'm not perfect, but one would think a business of their size would catch any & all spelling mishaps before sending out any emails. blankstare.gif

I know what you mean. I just got that same e-mail and totally noticed the error.  What ever happened to proofreading??

Ha - I noticed it too.  I'm not sure why stuff like that annoys me so much, but it bugs the hell out of me.

I see grammar and spelling errors constantly. I catch typos in books a lot, too. It drives me nuts.

I opened up this and my brain instantly read the phrase in quotes and I cringed. I could see the error immediately. If we can, then surely someone (which they obviously don't have someone) proof reading the emails would catch that.

Apparently I shouldn't complain about things like that or I have a double post.  smile

Ditto. I feel cheated when I find typos in a book.

Stuff like that bugs me too. I always read over the stuff I write to check for errors, sometimes several times just to be sure.

D, I had the same reaction to the same email! Mistakes jump out at me as if they were all highlighted. I wish I could turn off that part of my brain so that I could stop being annoyed but I can't help it....

Btw, this reminds me -- I was browsing a website the other day that was a serious abuser of quotation marks.... they actually had a sentence that read:

We strive for the "best" customer service and we believe that our "honesty" and "integrity" set us apart.

Why do people think they can put quotes wherever they please? bleh.gif

Dear GOD, are they run by hillbillies?  Wait, make that hillbillie'sbiggrin

Don't even get me started on spelling, punctuation, and grammar.  My biggest pet peeves, especially in business/advertising, are those things.bleh

Wow, that's terrible!!!  I'm by no means perfect either, but c'mon!  That's not a difficult error to catch and anyone, having read through it a second time, would have caught that.  That's just blatant laziness in my book.  bleh

And this is my all time biggest pet peeve in the world:
"We strive for the "best" customer service and we believe that our "honesty" and "integrity" set us apart."

When people use quotation marks like that, do they not understand that people like me read that as being the exact opposite of "honesty and integrity?"

You guys would love this book - it's all about grammar, punctuation and embracing your inner stickler. :)

Ugh. I catch those things all the time and then, to alleviate the horror, I always try and share these things with the friends I'm with and I know half of them are just as annoyed with me for sharing as I am with the error itself!

I had a professor once who wrote his own textbook, basically, which we bought instead of a real textbook. I had to break up that reading into several parts each night because I would get so distracted by all the errors and missing words. It took twice as long to read as it would have if he had just proofread it once! Grrrrr

Eats, Shoots, & Leaves is, indeed, a good book; but I really like Woe Is I best by Patricia O'Connor.  One of the chapters is named Comma Sutra!

I have to read through resumes virtually every day, so I have become quite picky too.
