fabric choices?

Do you ever wonder how someone knows ahead of time if a top or dress is going to look good out of a certain fabric?  I am bored out of my skull at work right now, so I was looking at the anthro site and got to thinking that if I were looking at these fabrics in a store, I would never think to make these top out of them, but they are so cute.

I'm sure they dont know for sure. But they probably have a good eye for what patterns/prints would be flattering. I'm sure you know this as a sewer, but I'm guessing they have the design in mind first and then they determine which fabrics would be suitable.
