i want to color my hair and add highlights, but i'm concerned about damage. right now my hair is black, i don't want to go blonde or anything like that. but i do want something noticeable. i'm thinking a chestnut brown with reddish streaks. how intensive would the process be? also i have a relaxer in my hair and i know you can't relax and color the same day. i want a change, but i'm scared. any tips?

i'd be VERY careful getting highlights in relaxed hair. what we recommended at the salon i used to work at was EITHER semi-permanent color or highlights done with color. (NOT bleach) i know some brands make a bleach supposedly usable for relaxed hair, but i've not used them. i would definitely go to a reputable salon, and since most offer free consultations (although maybe not in ny) i would try to do that.

also, by semi-permanent color, i mean really only to cover grey. semi has no lift.

ITA...When I had a relaxer I had a color rinse..My stylist said she refused to do anything else.I wore the rinse for about 5 years (I had it in when you saw me last summer) anyway the color got more intense as time went on, but without the damage.Oh I could totally see you w/ chestnut, reddish  hair smilebiggrin
