I decided to turn part of my front garden (right outside my giant picture window) into a butterfly garden.
I am looking for suggestions for flowers to put there. I know many seed company sites sell butterfly garden kits and what not, but I wanted to hear about plants that you had success with.
It's a small part of the garden that I am converting. It has a Thundercloud Plum tree planted in the middle of the circular area. The garden is bordered with varigated hostas. Around the base of the tree are creeping phlox and lambium. I am looking to plant some taller (about 30") flowers around the tree, in small clusters. The back of the butterfly circle is designated with purple and pink pincushion flower (known to some as cornflower).
I'm not interested in planting butterfly bush as they get too unshaply for this location.
I have a strip right off my front patio that I haven't been able to decide what to do with yet, but maybe a butterfly garden is just the ticket! Hmmmmm....

Other possibilities are Lantana, Verbena, Yarrow, and Passionflower vine - but that's definitely untidy!
I am told butterflies also need warmth and water. For warmth, they like a flat rock in the sun that they can bask on. For water, a saucer or birdbath filled with half sand, half soil. This is supposed to be kept wet. They land on the muck and drink the water.
