I've already talked to my mom, so I guess I don't need advice/comments anymore. But if anyone is reading this anyway.... basically, I got a job writing articles about lingerie and then was nervous to tell my conservative parents...

I'm excited about my new job! How to tell my parents, though?

I am sure that your parents will be happy for you. Trust me, I was really nervous to tell my parents that I got a job working for Playboy, but they were really proud of me. They knew that getting a job there was a tremendous accomplishment. Even my grandma was happy for me and she is best buds with our priest!! Just tell them!! BTW - Congrats!!

Thanks, Farrah! I just told her, and it didn't go as well I'd hoped, but not as horrific as I'd planned.

I told her, and I told the whole thing about "remember when you brought me to that lingerie boutique? I got interested and started ordering things online and that led me to a forum where I could ask others about brands since I couldn't see them in person before buying...blah blah blah... and now they want me to be a freelance writer!"

She kind of just pursed her lips and said "hmmmm. that's interesting."

"Just interesting? I'm excited!"

"oh, yeah, it's exciting.....(long pause)....that's interesting....(long pause)...remember to keep track of that for your taxes" and then she completely changed the subject, with one short aside that she wanted me to email her a link to the website.

Sigh. I had kind of talked myself into courage by telling myself that she'd be excited for me, and now I'm back to being worried about what she things. Ugh.

Try not to stress about what she thinks. It doesn't matter - it matters what YOU think and how excited YOU are. She'll come around!

That's what I keep telling myself, but I'm also worried what my dad will think when she tells him (NO WAY am I telling him myself! I just know this is something he'd think is an indicator that I'm some horrible sinner or something). I showed her my first piece, even though she wasn't excited, to try and get her used to the idea. I did my first little article reviewing a lingerie detergent...not the most glamourous topic ever but I wanted to be able to show her something to ease her into the idea :) Hopefully she'll come around or just never mention it again.

I can understand how you feel. My dad is a devoute Catholic and I would be scared to tell him something like that also.

But the weird thing is that youre just writing. Its not like youre posing IN the lingeire. Hopefully your mom will come to see that youre doing something that you enjoy, and even she doesnt agree with it, she can still be happy for you. smile
