I haven't been posting much recently, except to throw in a comment or two about my favorite show...LOST!!! My boss has been "frowning upon" internet time to everyone lately, and we have been in the middle of our move so I don't get a chance to get on much. My husband and I sold our condo and are now living in our very own 4 bedroom 2 bath house with a fence and yard and the whole enchilada. We are SOOOO happy there and will be welcoming our new edition on May 12th.
I give you...DUKE!!!
He is a beautiful 7 week old Harlequin Great Dane born from parents who live a couple blocks from our new house. I didn't know this, but Great Danes can be bread dry or wet mouthed and he is a dry mouth so he doesn't drool (well, only as much as any normal dog)!! Great news for me and my new couches! He is going to be a very big boy, his daddy is 2 years old and weighs 160 pounds. My husband and I are very much big dog lovers talked a lot about getting a Great Dane before we moved. Most people are very excited for us, but some of the reactions I have been getting have been kind of negative. A few people give me the "Oh my god, you are nuts, do you know how big they get?" Why would I get a Great Dane if I didn't know that? They think that just because they are so big they will be mean and misbehave and have the control over their owners. Great Danes are one of the most gentle, loving, and obedient dogs out there. We are very aware of how large he will be, and will love every inch of him!!! I hope you fellow dog lovers can back me up here!
I think big dogs are the greatest, you can't give a little dog a decent hug, but I love hugging big dogs! Don't worry about the nay-sayers, it's not right for them obviously, but I don't get why they care what you do.
We were considering a St. Bernard until we realized they have massive drooling problems, so we are picking up our new rottie pup next Tuesday.
Congratulations! Don't let people get you down. One of my pet peeves is actually when people are down on a dog breed either because it isn't right for them or because they read about a one bad dog in the paper. Our dog is a mix, but he's probably predominantly Border Collie. When we first adopted him we got a ton of "but they have so much energy and need so much exercise." My standard response was basically, "well, it's a good thing he isn't your dog then."
Anyway, I absolutely LOVE big, huge dogs. I grew up w/ a Saint Bernard, a Great Dane, and Newfie. We don't have room for another pet right now, but we totally plan to have one of the giant breeds some time in the future.
I love him! He's so sweet and that belly is adorable!
I also love big dogs but ours in a boxer so she's really not that big compared to a great dane. Everyone thinks it's wierd that she's an inside dog though.
My sister had some company over and they brought their Great Dane inside her house and she said he was the most well behaved dog she's ever been around. He didn't try to chase cats, jump on furniture, or jump on anyone. THe only thing he did was try to sneak a few bites of cat food when no one was looking lol.
He's so cute! I didn't know what about the dry and wet mouth options...very interesting!
I think it's great you're getting a big dog! I was disappoited when my mixed-breed grew up to only be 50 lbs instead of the 75 I was ancitipating. Now BF says he never wants a dog over 35 lbs....so I'm jealous of you!!! They're so sweet, everyone I know with a GD loves them!

Awwww hes so cute! I LOVE big dogs!!!! Drew is right...I actually think that big dogs (except a few exceptions) are much more laid back, easier to play with, easier to cuddle with, than small dogs. I have a kuvas, Bo. He is 120. And his dad was even bigger. He is my big fluff ball! Have fun with your new puppy!!!
Just a word of warning...I'm not sure if this is your first dog or not, but especially for a big breed you need to train him for the future. He's small now, but obviously you know he will be huge fully grown. So teach him not to jump up on you (or anyone else), be on the couches, etc. Unless, you dont mind that when hes older. Thats not to say when he is trained he can never be on the couch with you guys if you dont mind, but he'll only do it with your permission.
he's ADORABLE! Look at his full belly in that last picture! Too cute!
I'm not racist, I love all sizes of dogs! :)
I have a small one (6lbs.) and I have a GS that's 70lbs. and I can cuddle both of them any way I want! No matter what size, they all should be trained. or else they'll eat your money! (thats another story I posted)
Ahhhhh!! S he is adorable! I love Great Danes. They are so sweet and beautiful. Of course, having one in the city would be tough, ha! That being said, Vinny has a Great Dane friend named Sampson and although he is HUGE he and Vinny play very well together. He's a total sweetie. Congrats on both him and the HUGE new house too!!

Wonderful! I think Great Danes are my favorite in the whole wide world. I had dreams growing up of getting a jet black GD and naming her Sabrina and going on trips in my awesome black big black Dodge Ram pick-up truck. Just me, Sabby (that would have been her nickname), and the road. :) I didn't know GD's came spotted...that is so wonderful, I might have to add a second GD into my dream fantasy.

He is so cute! I'm assuming that is the proud poppa? I think big dogs are awesome, don't listen to those people who try to tell you otherwise. Congratulations on the new house too!
OMG -- adorable! Duke is a perfect name, too. The dog park I used to go to had several Great Danes. They were always so sweet! Their owners used to schedule times to meet, because none of the regular-size dogs would play with them. =(
I am partial to big dogs too, but your big dog makes mine look like chihuahuas!

I jsut want to add one more thing. I urge you to check out this book, "Don't Shoot the Dog." It's about operative behavior therapy, and is a really great way to train your dog. You can also google, "Clicker training." For lots of great information on how to do it (it's easy, you can teach your dog extremely fast and it's the absolute most humaine way too), even videos so you can learn exactly how to do it the right way.
What a cutie! I loooooooooooove his little belly! Gah! So cute!
Unfortunately I think the reason there are so many naysayers is because there are SO MANY people who get dogs that they either know nothing about or don't take the time to train. It's so sad, but when I volunteered at a no-kill shelter in high school, we had a ton of dalmations because the movie 101 Dalmations had just come out and a bunch of people got dalmations just because their kids wanted one. Well, they're not the best-suited dogs for kids and if you don't take the time to train them, like any dog, they can be a total pain in the a**. It sucks that that kind of thing happens so much.
So anyway, that's my schpiel. I'm happy your dog is going to have a happy home. He's really cute and that name is perfect! And as long as you know what to expect with the breed and you're willing to put the time into training him, then go for it!

Thats so true! People will get dogs bc of popularity or cuteness, without taking into regard what personality the dog has.
My mom just told me that dalmations just got added to the "biting dogs" list.
I love him. He has the cutest look on his face in that last picture (and the most adorable and round puppy tummy). He is probably just sleepy, but it looks like he's trying to look tough! I love dogs of all sizes and breeds.
Great Danes are such awesome dogs - they really are gentle giants. When we were deciding what breed to get, it was down between a Dane and what we actually ended up with, but I still want a Dane someday! There's one that walks down our street all the time and he's the biggest I've ever seen: if dogs wore pants , his inseam would be nearly 6 inches longer than his 6 ft tall owners!
We really liked the book How To Raise A Puppy You Can Live With, but there are also GD-specific books/sites out there. I also think about doing a puppy kindergarten if you have a Petsmart or a dog training facility around - our pup enjoys it immensly, and it keeps us on track.
Congrats!
