Do you ever have items in your closet that you're just sick of looking at? I have a few tops like this. I can't figure out why I am sick of looking at them; I don't wear them much, though I don't know why. They aren't out of style, poor quality or fit, or run-down, so they haven't made it into the giveaway pile. I am just sick of them staring at me from the closet racks. Sometimes I force myself to wear them, but then I am sick of looking at them all day.
Does this happen to anyone else? What do you think it means -- that the particular piece doesn't work in my wardrobe for whatever reason? Or am I just nuts? Should these tops and I go to family therapy?

I was just looking through my closet and I have one top that would definitely fit in that category. In my case, this particular top is a tad trendier than is normal for me, and I think it just isn't working for me. It's probably like you said, the tops just don't fit into your wardrobe for one reason or another.
i feel this way about stand-alone tops, ie. ones that have recognizable patterns or have weird detailing/neckline that can't be worn with multiple outfits. If I can only wear a top with jeans, then i get sick of it. So I rarely bother buying "cute tops"- i just tire of them. I like simple and subtle details.
Oh, I know exactly what you're talking about! I have a few items like that myself. I haven't worn them in a very long time, but also can't bring myself to give them to Goodwill either. Maybe if I put them in the back of the closet for a long time, eventually they will be as appealing as the day I bought them.
I definitely have those. They're things that I just never feel like wearing, but I can't pinpoint anything exactly wrong or bad about them, so I can't justify getting rid of them.

I think this might be my problem, actually!

this happens to me, so i usually store them for a season and then "rediscover" them lol

I go through phases of hating everything I own. The hate is not designated for any one piece in particular..lol
this is me too! every so often i think i want to chuck everything and start from scratch. (or at the very least, keep maybe 20 favorite pieces, and get rid of everything else)

Ditto! Every now and then I just want to throw everything away, pull all of my money out of savings and just go wild on a spending spree. Common sense usually prevails at some point though, luckily!

me too. gaasldf. we should post our most hated items and help each other make cool/new outfits. bah.
Oh boy, yes. Prints especially for me as well. I know people think having all solids is boring, but I get sick of looking at the same print tops or skirts hanging in the closet all the time.
And shoes too. Sometimes I have to tell perfectly good shoes "I'm sorry, I'm just not that into you."
Oh, and I use the "I'm sick of this XYZ" excuse to shop for...a new XYZ.
I remember this posting from a while ago and couldn't think of anything to add.
Over the weekend, I *snapped* and just got rid of a bunch of stuff. I wasn't planning to do that, it just happened (feels awesome too!). I was rutheless.
I think the reason we are singling out printed tops/embellished pieces/apparel in odd colors in this thread is because all those items take a lot more work to incorporate into an outfit! Think about it. Most of us rarely have time to brush our teeth in the morning as we rush out the door for the day. Having to compute algorithms in order to put something cute together just gets tiring.
And, if you're anything like me, perfection with unique pieces is very important. If I am wearing something unusual, and the outfit does not quite "click," I feel like poo all day. Not cool.
Do any of you ever put a piece of clothing on an imaginary pedestal? I will acquire a top, for example, that is really unique and interesting. I want it to be PERFECT whenever I wear it. So, it sits in my closet forever until I have the guts and the accessories to wear it. Weird?

i can relate. i felt like poo today even though there was nothing "wrong" with my outfit. it just wasn't my first pick. and to compound things i'm having an exestential crisis when it comes to clothes (will post about this).
i'm also totally guilty of the sit in closet syndrome. i have a couple of really unique pieces that i love, but don't really wear. usually i'm good about tossing something after a year of not wearing it, but with these i keep them around b/c i love them so much. though i will add, it does feel awesome to finally wear the piece. i had this great nicholas k top that was sitting in my closet for a year. i tried it with a couple of things but wasn't really feeling it. i finally found the right combo. and felt great -- totally triumphant fashion moment.
I basically get tired of wearing something after X number of times. That's why I can't imagine wearing "investment" type clothing, or doing the quality over quantity thing. I wouldn't want to wear the same piece of clothing for the next 5 years... I'd get sick of it.

Omg!! I have this same problem!! I have a few tops that are so annoying to lppk at but they are perfectly fine, so I can't seem to get rid of them, it's maddening! I think I should just buy plain tops and this wouldn't happen as much!
Or, Halleybird you could give these "annoying" tops to your favorite sister.....which is me, btw..... then you wouldnt have to look at them anymore.....hey, i am only thinking of you here..... :)

This happens to me with most types of prints to the point where I reaalllly have to question myself before buying something with a really distinctive, stand out print. I think the problem with anything that is really "different" (no matter how cute it is...and especially common with anything from Anthro) is that wearing it once is like wearing something else 5 times because it's so memorable...wear it too many times and it's like "she's wearing the dress again." Not sure if that makes sense.
