I found a turtle

It was in the middle of the street so I brought it in. I was afraid it was going to get run over. What do I do? I don't want to keep it. Anyone know what they eat? TIA

If you don't want to keep it, can you just let it go again?

When we were little, we'd catch box turtles all the time and our mom would let us keep them for a few days. They all seemed to really love tomatoes and lettuce. I think any soft fruit/vegetable is good.

Maybe there's a local wildlife rescue in your area - you could call them and ask where to let it go.

In the meantime, I'd try to feed it lettuce and other fruits/veggies.

That's so sweet of you to save it!

my brother has a turtle and he feeds it canned cat food. He's had it for a few years.

I would just let it go near where you found it so hopefully it can find its way back home. When I was little I always fed my my turtles veggies.

I feel kind of weird letting it go in the middle of the street. There are constantly cars coming up and down the street. I think my sister and brother want to keep it. I believe it's a red ear turtle.

If you plan on keeping it, just make sure to research the proper care and maintence of this type of turtle; my brother used to catch turtles as a kid and they usually died even though he would feed them veggies.

Is there a water source near where you found him like a creek or lake?  If so, just put the little guy near the water source, it's probably his home or near home.

Just a word of warning if your brother and sister keep it: turtles STINK. My friend got her boyfriend a turtle for his birthday without thinking it through, and I think they ended up giving it away because it was making the whole house smell. If you can keep on top of the cleaning, I'm sure it could be okay because some people do have turtles for pets. But I think they require a lot more maintenance than most aquarium-type pets.

Drew, there are no creeks or lake by my house. I'm not too sure if we are going to keep it. We are definitely planning on researching the turtle to see if we can take care of it. If not we'll find it a place.
thanks so much girls!

My dad has a turtle that he sort of got stuck raising.  Her name is Rosie & she is so beyond cool.  When we got her, her shell was smaller than the palm of my hand.  Now you have to hold her with both hands & she digs immense holes in the ground.  My dad feeds her romain lettuce, strawberries (cute b/c it turns her mouth red), carrots & turtle food from the pet store.  She also eats the dandeloins in our yard.  Apparently shes going to be huge & live way longer than us.  I'd google turtles to find out what kind she & what her needs will be if you decide to keep her.
This is what Rosie looks like.
