What are you feeding your dogs?

I didn't realize my dog's food was recalled until he threw up, and even then, I only really noticed it until it wasn't on the shelf anymore. Bad me! He's fine because he doesn't really like dog food, but I was wondering, more and more dog foods are being recalled, what are you feeding your pets?

My mom switched our pets to dry food. Since they don't live with me I am not sure what they are on. Meow Mix for the cat I think but not sure about the dog. This whole recall has been a mess.

Solid Gold Holistique Blend - they use all domestic ingredients and haven't been recalled yet.

We've got our dog on Solid Gold Beef and Barley blend right now. Other foods she's been on have been:

Chicken soup for the dog lover's soul
Cannidae
Pinnacle
Merrick's Wilderness Blend

You should be able to find these at any local pet supply store (not petsmart or petco though). None of these foods have been recalled.

Vinny is on the BARF diet. He eats Companion Natural Pet Food.

Well, I saw on Oprah that you should make your own dog food.  Dry food is at the bottom of the list because it's mostly carbs and cats and dogs are carnivores and should mostly eat meat.  Takes more time but it's something to consider.

Of course making you own dog food or feeding them a raw diet would be ideal but a good alternative is premium dry dog food , it's not mostly carbs.   Grocery store brands do have a lot of carbs in them, mainly corn, but the good kind of food that you can buy at pet supply stores can be really healthy for you pets.

The main ingredient in the food I feed my dog is beef and beef meal is the second ingredient.  It's more pricey than the grocery store brands (about $40 for a 33 lb bag) but my dog is allergic to corn and can't eat a lot of brands.

I agree with all of this. My dogs eat Natural Balance, which is mostly meat. It was involved in some of the recall (not the product I used, though). It makes me upset, but they have also published the steps they're taking to ensure that it doesn't happen again. One of my dogs has a super-sensitive stomach, so I am hesitant to switch him again.

Also, making your own dog food can be a good idea, but you have to be really careful. My aunt and grandma do this, but because human food is so caloric, it isn't always the best thing for them. All of their dogs have weight problems.
