Buyer claimes dress was damaged.
Permalink Closed

I sold a shelly segal silk dress on e-bay.  I bought it but decided it wasn't the right length for me.  I had tried it on twice but the tags were attached.  I tried it on just before listing it and checked it in a room with bright sunlight and it was perfect.  The buyer is claiming it has huge stains downthe front that a dry cleaner can't remove.  I'm totally shocked since I looked at the dress a number of times and saw nothing.  She claims it would be obvious with a cursory look.

Anyone hear of anything like this happening?  I wrote back and asked for pictures.  I'm not sure what to do.  She bought the dress for $61 US and it sold originally for closer to $300.

Any suggestions on how to deal with this?

Edit to add her response to my request for pictures...
These stains will not show up on pictures or I would have seen them before bidding on this dress. You have to look at the dress in light less than a bright sunlight. As far as I am concerned this has been a learning experience for me.I will not be a return customer.

Is it just me or does this sound strange?  If the stains are so bad that they were noticeable with a quick glance then why would they not photograph?  And why would they not be apparent in sunlight?  I'm also wondering what would cause a stain that a drycleaner could not remove from a dress that was silk chiffon?  If it is really possible to have a stain that is so bad it ruins a dress, but isn't visible in sunlight or in a photo and can't be removed by a dry cleaner, then I will offer a refund.  Any comments please?

I think I'm going to stop re-selling on e-bay.  I find this type of situation very bothersome.

Crazy. Either have her provide photos or tell her to send the dress back.

Thanks Erin and Kitty.  I haven't heard from the buyer since she said the "stain" wouldn't show up on photos.  If I do, I'll offer to refund her less the fees if she sends it with tracking and it has all of the tags still attached.  I think either it didn't fit well or she wore it and wanted to return it.

I'll wait and see.  If I don't hear anything I'll be happy.  What a pain.  Given that the dress was featured in Instyle and still had the Bloomingdales tags, I probably could have sold in in a consignment shop for more.

the whole business about her saying it won't show up in pictures is super sketchy. But my concern about demanding pictures is that she very well could just stain it herself and then take a picture.

honestly, she sounds like she's full of steaming shit. if she has the cojones to file a claim, no one in their right mind would buy that argument. just hold out on feedback until she leaves hers.

eta: most buyers aren't like this!  don't let one jackass discourage you from ebaying!

Well its been almost two weeks and I haven't heard back again. She didn't leave any feedback at all. I guess she thought she'd give it a try just in case and then gave up. At least I hope so. Thanks for the advice and support.

That seems to be it.  Obviously it didn't fit her or she wore it and was done with it and wanted her money back.  If she honestly thought the stain was your doing she wouldn't have backed off.
