We were feeding my puppy Royal Canin, which just recalled dry food. I called Royal Canin and the vet and apparantely our food is ok and not part of the recall, but I'm not taking any chances. The ironic thing is, yesterday, Simon was really sick - vomitting, diarhea and today the recall...hmm.
Anyone have any suggestions on what to feed my dog? I thought about the BARF diet (bone and raw food diet), but my vet didn't recommend it for Simon, especially since he's so small and young. We're thinking of buying organic food from now on.
I feed my dog a frozen raw diet - all human-grade quality and she loves it- its supposed to be the healthiest thing you can feed them. It's fine to start them as a puppy on it. This is what I feed:
I am not sure organic food is going to be safe from these kinds of things either, unless the company is very small.
I am annoyed at the FDA and at a lot of these companies. Why is no one regulating this? Furthermore, some companies (like Natural Balance, which I use, and which was supposed to be OK) claimed over and over that they were NOT part of the recall, until -- oops! then they were. My dogs' food isn't being recalled, but who knows if it will be? I don't trust any of those companies anymore. Ugh! [/rant]
Anyway, I have heard great things about the raw-food diet. It's not feasible for my lifestyle with two large dogs, but since your dog is small it would be relatively easy to do. I'd ask your vet.

I feed my puppy Innova. The link to the manufacturer site is below:
http://www.naturapet.com/
It's made by Natura Pet Products which produces food for a few different labels. It claims to have all human grade ingredients and be the first "holistic" pet food. You can locate stores on their website that sell it, as they only sell to small pet stores. Not the Petco or Pet Smart type stores.
It ended up that Maddie (my year old puggle) was allergic to corn, and that's what a lot of cheaper dog foods use as filler. Maddie has been eating Innova for about 11 mos. now (she just turned a year) and the vet is amazed at how shiny her coat is. The other nice thing is that since dogs can digest so much of the food (Natura doesn't use as many inedible ingredients as the grocery store brands) that you don't have to feed her as much.
Which is good because it's expensive, but worth it I think.
