I might be pregnant- Or how CVS is run by douchebags. (Long)
Permalink Closed

Okay, well, not really. The chances of me being pregnant are so entirely completely slim but I thought that headline might grab your attention. smile.gif Right now, I am so pissed and frustrated that I wanna either scream or cry or maybe both. Here's how my last couple of days went down:

Saturday: Realize that I need to go to the drug store to get my next month's supply of birthcontrol. Yes, I realize that going on the VERY day that my pills run out isn't smart. I head over to the CVS in X section of town since I moved and can't easily get to the CVS in Y section of town which is where I had been picking my pills up. Y section CVS was great- no issues, the pharm guy knew me by name and sight and took great care of me. However- I go to the new CVS and I say, "I just need to refill a prescription". She kindly takes me name, looks me up and then remarks "You don't have any refills". WTF? I ain't no moron, I am very clear with knowing when I need to get my refills. Every month I go in, I would ask my friendly pharm guy how many I had left. Last time I was in, he said three. Okay, awesome. Apparently, I don't and that was a big scam or something. The prescription was only good for one year even though it had way more refills available than what I could get in a year. Okay, I'm not really freaking out yet. I have Saturday's pill to take, and then I'm out. I can email my doc who is awesome and she can right a scrip and I can pick it up Monday and I will only have missed one day. Not a problem.

Sunday: I email my doc. I know she probably won't respond till Monday but I want her to see it first thing Monday morning.

Monday: No response from the doc by noon. I email her again. (and yes, I know that I should have just called by then.) At 5:15, I get an email from her MA telling me that the scrip was ready and I could pick it up. The email was sent out at 4:45, thier offices close at 5:00. WTF? Seriously? I immeaditly email back and ask for the scrip to be called into CVS at X location. I was hoping that I would catch them still in the office doing paperwork. No response. I start freaking out a little.

Tuesday: I get an email around noon saying "Yaz?". That's the entire email. Now mind you, my first email (and second) quite clearly stated what the scrip was for. I emailed her back with what I needed. She emails be back an hour and a half later saying "what's the pharm #?". Fuck. Okay, email her back with the number. Another hour goes by and I get an email "what's your last name and DOB?". Deep breaths. My last name would be what's on the email, what I sign with, what the email address comes from, and what I told you originally. There is only one of me, for pete's sake. Okay- by this time I now have to go to a four hour class which isn't over until 8. After class, I'm hoping against hope that the scrip got called in and I walk to CVS. I stop at the counter and ask to pick up the scrip. The gentleman looks my name up and says "Nope." OH MY GOD. He looks through everything, the computer, the little pieces of paper, the bin with filled scrips. Nothing. Okay, wow. Serious freaking out. It will now be three days with no pills.

Wednesday: I don't have work and no class till 1. I call CVS and make sure the scrip was called in. Yep, guess what? It was called in yesterday and the douchebag couldn't find it. WTF. Deep breaths. Okay- have to go to class and then lecture/presentations till 8. Afterwards I walk to CVS and go to the counter. Yep, my scrip is there but there's a problem with the insurance. I give her my card. Turns out....wait for it...I can't fill the scrip even though it's right there. The pills are in the little bag and I can't have them. The prescription was originally written last year for three months supply at once. My insurance wouldn't let me do that even though my doc wrote on the scrip- override, medically necessary or some shit. Whatever- the drugstore was close by and it wasn't a big deal. However, last month, March 13th, was when I picked up the previous month and somehow thier records show me paying for three months, $30 worth of pills which makes me ineligble for the pills until June even though it's a completely different prescription. WTF. I would clearly know how many pills I got. Do they seriously think I would be needing the pills if I had a supply until June? They are generics, not even some sort of fancy pill. Oh my good lord.

So, as it stands right now, the scrip that I struggled to get from my doc is worthless. And I am now four days without pills. I'm totally off my cycle and I had sex on Friday (sorry, TMI). I was on the end of my period, four day menustration, started on Wednesday, so chances are slim but crap crap crap. I can't even prove that I only got $10 worth of pills because I don't have the receipt and my bank statement shows $32.98 purchase from CVS on that day which means I probably needed toilet paper or something. Oh my good lord.

I'm just gonna get a doc friend to write me a scrip for some random generic Ortho-Tri and see what happens. I can't even get samples because Ortho-Tri isn't being pushed anymore.

The most ironic thing? The BF goes away for summer field work in three weeks which means that this month was the last month that I truly needed the pills until late August.

There is a happy ending of sorts. Now I can try out getting the Mirena IUD cause I'll be off the pill anyway and it would be a great chance to start something new. Right? That makes this a happy ending, right?  hmm

oh my gosh, that sucks! That must be so stressful! If I just forget my pills when I go away for a night I freak out and go home ASAP. This might be a long shot, but was is the tax in your area? Is $2.98 the appropriate tax for a purchase of exactly $30? If not, you could maybe use that as evidence that you didn't buy three packs?

relrel, sorry you had to go through all this! it sounds very frustrating

some comments/concerns/questions:

1)my insurance only approves of 12 birth controls a year, every such n such a day (I cant buy 2 in one month) and gives one "vanity" prescription in case I lose a pack or need it for vacation. maybe this is something you can look into?

2)why can't you just pay cash for your prescription????? insurance can't STOP YOU FROM TAKING THE PILL, they can just deny coverage. Most brands are about $40 from my experience.

3)if you go to school, can't you go to the medical office on campus and have them give you the pills?

4)condoms?

OMG. How frustrating!

I'm sure that you have done your research if you are serious about getting an IUD, but just in case I feel I should caution you that its not the kind of thing you try out. I have one if you have any questions. Feel free to PM me.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes. I know I'm not pregnant but this is the first time EVER that I've missed pills and it sucks that it's not really in my control.

XtinaStyles: There's really nothing I can do about getting the insurance to pay for it. Ain't gonna happen. I did realize today that I could have just paid for the stupid pills out of pocket. Last night, tired cranky and pissed off, I wasn't thinking straight. As it stands, it's really too late and probably would have been too late anyway to try and catch up.

Mandy: I've done tons of research on the IUD. In fact, I work basically with ob/gyns all day and have talked to every single one of them about it. I'm probably getting too much info and opinions on it, but oh well. I guess my wording of "trying out" wasn't quite right. What I really meant was that since my bf is gone for months at a time, I can start the IUD and have everything working (ie- no spotting or anything like that) by the time he's back. I'm pretty set on using an IUD, it's just whether or not my doc is comfortable with me using it since I don't have kids...but I don't want them ever either. We're just gonna talk it all out at my next visit.

Good lord. This is exactly why you should be able to get the pill over the counter or have the pharmacy prescribe it for you, like they do in other countries.

wow. you really need to make an active effort to be *that* incompetent. isn't it great that they're hard at work perpetuating the idea that the health profession is overrun by idiots? and you're personally getting screwed, too!

See, I actually blame your doc for most of this. Except for the CVS dude on Tuesday night not being able to find your prescription, most of this is your doc's fault. Also, FWIW, different states have different laws as to whether or not you can fill a prescription at on pharmacy and pick it up at another.

Very true.

But I know that when I was in college (private Jesuit Institution) that if the Health Services on campus found out that a female student was on the pill she would lecture her on it. The campus doctors would not prescribe any medications for birth control pills or the Morning After pill.

That's when I started using the mail-in prescription services. My doctor writes me a prescription for 4 refills of three months each and they are sent directly to my house. I just have to call a number and then you don't even have to go to the pharmacy. I still do that now. Laziness or using the system . . .

When CVS bought Sav-On, they did this same thing to me (kinda, just less dramatic). Somehow they lost 3 months of refills of my BC. Because it looked like I was out they had to call the doctor for approvals, which they're cool about, thangawd.

I'm now on Mirena, BTW. I'm like you. Don't have kids, don't want any. You're right that it's usually not advised if you have no children; one, because there's a risk of infertility, and two, because uterus size can be too small. As long as your doctor isn't a freaky pronatalist, and you sign a million pieces of paper, you can get it.

I wouldn't try to do it with your BF out of town, or at least have a buddy go with you, because it's a painful insertion and you might need someone to take care of you for a bit.

So far the best part is never having to go to CVS again. I am free of that place!!!

I just think this is so crazy.  This happened to me once - I had moved & couldn't get into a new doctor soon enough & my prescription had expired.  My pharmacist looked at my records - I had been getting the same prescription there every month for 8 years & he just filled it for me on the spot.  I know TECHNICALLY they aren't supposed to do that but it's just birth control, people, not heroin.  I don't know if called my doctor after the fact to cover his ass, but it didn't seem to be an act of congress.  Walgreens, btw.

On a completely different yet related note, I'm pissed at CVS too - well, they happened to be the pharmacy I walked into.  I got a cold & went to get some mucinex Sunday morning.  Couldn't because the pharmacy is closed.  The woman in front of me bought a carton of cigs though.  I guess  Pseudoephedrine doesn't have as good a lobby as tobacco.  Seriously, I don't care if someone wants to spend their morning driving all around DFW to gather sudafed & mucinex to make it into crystal meth.  I just want my head to clear up.  Geeze.
