One company (which was not the company I worked for) called Briggs and Riley will even replace damaged luggage (even if the airlines damage it!) and I like that kind of guarantee. All luggage is expensive but I would hate for you to fall in love with your bag only to have it stolen or ruined (especially if you spend big dollars on it).

Coming from someone who LIVES out of a suitcase- don't do it. When I first started this job I decided to splurge and buy a great Tumi bag. Even though its Tumi and supposedly lasts forever, its starting to look pretty beat up and rough after 2 years of being tossed in and out of my car and flying with it at least once a month if not more.

That being said- when i decided I needed a bigger bag- i went with a cheapy DVF that i found at TJ Maxx so that when it became super beat- i wouldn't care.

Even though you said this would be used as a carry on- a lot of times i have to gate check my 21" TUMI b/c there isn't room overhead for my bag. so even if you think you get to carry on your bag- you might not.

just some food for thought.... i do, however, think the bag you are lusting over is gorgeous and love the idea of it being well worn leather and slightly scratched. sounds lovely!!!

I've had a good bag destroyed, so I can't bring myself to spending a ton of money on a bag. I found a great TravelPro @ Ross while on vacation in Hawaii for only $40. It took a beating, but is still holding up strong.

I do have a large, black bag by Atlantic. It's generic, yet durable, but I can ID my bag b/c I have these crazy bright flowers that I've wrapped around the handles. I used to get laughs when I checked in, but @ baggage claim, it works like a charm.

I have this Floto bag, and I really like it...the leather is a tad shiny (not as shiny as it looks in the picture), but it get's that worn look the more I carry it. My BF liked it so much that he ordered a smaller version for him. Plus it holds a ton.

I have Mulholland luggage (not the all leather, but leather/canvas version) and LOVE IT. I travel extensively, but only take this on my "special trips". Basically when I fly first class or to a nice destination, I take my good luggage and for short trips or driving trips, I take my cheaper Atlantic hard-side luggage. In addition, I have an overnight bag for short travel. I feel much more "put together" with my nice luggage and think this type of durable leather could last forever as a carry-on piece, so I say go for it.
