A good friend of mine is 6 months pregnant and I am flying out for her baby shower in 2 and half months and have no idea what to get her. She is a first time SINGLE mom, daddy has flown the coop and her family has disowned her. That being said I would like to get her something substantial but not too spendy. Moms, any ideas?

First can I ask do you know others who will attend the shower? If so do you think you could organize it so everyone, or even a few others, brought a package of diapers, different sizes? This is one of the greatest things I've seen done at showers lately. I think its a great thing for the new mom too, to have a stock pile, and extras when they change sizes. Also may I suggest you do a search over on mamastyle, there are some post about the top favorites for new moms and some great, very practical things you might not think of.
Yeah, get her something practical (I like gift cards because the recipient can get whatever they need. Maybe Babies R Us?) and maybe something like flowers to make her feel happy. I'd want another thing to be happy about if that was my situation. :)
I second gift cards. I know I would have liked to received them. Target would be a good one. They have diapers, clothing, furnishings, bedding, equipment, just about everything a mom needs for a baby. Also I think it would really thoughtful to get a small gift for the mom-to-be. Like a nice body wash or lotion.
You could purchase a stroller/carseat combo, swing or high chair. Or maybe crib bedding if she has picked that out. Gift cards are wonderful to receive too. I received this snap on high chair with my second daughter and I loved it so much that it's my go-to baby gift. I think I've given 3 or 4. I got it at Babies R Us, and it's $50. We would just leave it in the car and bring it in at restaurants, friends/relatives houses, etc. We got so much use out of it!
Get her something that is a baby must have like a baby bottle feeding set w/some bibs and pacifiers, or a car seat or travel system, a baby bouncer, baby sling so can multitask while holding the baby. You cant go wrong with a GC to Target or diapers like itsapinkthing suggested.
I agree with bargainqueen.........people always want to buy the "cute: sometimes unpractical stuff for showers, but in reality, we all need the nessecities......here is a good list of the things I needed for both of my boys, they may seem dull, but she will thank you later!! And you can wrap it all up with lots of bows and ribbons to make it more fun!
Diapers Crib Sheets!! Bottles Burp cloths!! BIBS Extra blankets ( you could have fun with this at Target, they have great cozy blankies) SOCKS Print out a few "baby sitter coupons" with cute graphics for those time she needs a real break :) Baby lotion/soap
A couple things that are also great, and I used was a foam bath mat ( Target) so she can lay the baby in the bath tun with a little bit of water, it beats the "baby bath" where trhey slide down the whole time and scream hehe
Also another friend of mine found these great little mesh teethers that you can put fruit in and let the baby mush away without risk of choking ( also at Target). Hope this helps. The best gift you can give her is your help too. Just let her know she is NOT alone in this! What a great friend :)
