Are you supposed to clean out your blowdryer?
Permalink Closed

I have had mine for a way long time but it is acting really wonky lately.  It sometimes makes this hissing noise when I turn it on and I think it might be because there is a lot of hair in it or something.  Are you supposed to clean it out or should I just get a new one?  Thanks.

I've never heard of anyone cleaning it out, and I'd be afraid to try because I'd probably electrocute myself. I guess it couldn't hurt, if the only options are to clean it or buy a new one you might as well try to clean it and if you give up or if you break it, you'll just have to buy a new one anyway.

Clean it before you use it, so it's not hot, and unplugged of course. Use an old tooth brush and fish around for fuzz and hair. I usually just clean the vent where the fuzzies get stuck.

Are you finding that it doesn't dry your hair as efficiently as it used to? If so the back of the dryer where the air intake is probably needs cleaning out. My dryer has a little vented plastic cover that screws off and I just clean the lint and fuzzies off the screen.

I never considered cleaning my blow dryer until a guy I used to go out with looked at it and said "I could make that run about 75% more efficiently by cleaning out the crap". He was a machinist or some such thing. So yeah, I always pick the fuzz out of mine.

You should clean out the lint trap on the back if you are able to.  If there are fuzzies and hairs blocking the air intake portions, it won't work as well.  You can try using tweezers or a toothpick.

As for cleaning out the inside, it's probably better to buy a new blowdryer than mess with the mechanical parts.
