yes....i tried it, it stinks....literally.
all of the pee settles on the bottom making a swheat paste....yuck.
one i actually bought is made of crystals, it is in a blue bag......it is made of salt and water.  it actually soaks up the pee into the crystals...one bag lasts 1 month if you only have one cat...all you do is scoop the solid waste.
