I believe this is mostly wet foods with gravy, so if you feed your dog or cat dry food don't start panicking!

I'm interested in learning a little about a raw diet if you don't mind.  Is it actually raw food you buy at the grocery store or do you buy it freeze dried?  Also how expensive do you think it would be for a 50+ lb dog?

Right now I give my dog the higher quality dry food (canidae, pinnacle, chicken soup for the dog lover's soul, etc.) but she never really loves her food and it's always kind of a struggle to get her to eat as much as she should eat.  She LOVES fruit and veggies though...are those included in the raw diet?

Just a warning...the NYTimes article about the pet food recall specifically mentioned the company that makes Science Diet- Colgate Palmolive and said they were recalling some of thier products. That list doesn't say anything about Science Diet so I would assume that you are in the clear and the NYTimes was just using them as an example? I don't know...I just wanted to make sure your puppy was okay.

Menu Foods said it had recalled some food made for the Iams unit of Procter & Gamble. Two other pet food companies — Nestlé Purina PetCare and Hills Pet Nutrition, the unit of Colgate-Palmolive that makes the Science Diet brand — recalled some of their products that were made by Menu Foods.

We buy the food frozen and thaw it when he is ready to eat it.  The brand that we buy comes in 2 and 8 pound versions, but there are other brands out there that come in other sizes.  The actual diet is called BARF: Bone and Raw Food.  The food has certain percentages of bone, vegetables, and raw meat all mixed together.  We feed Vinny a variety of beef, duck, chicken, and turkey.  They also have fish, but it is too stinky and weird for us so we try not to feed it to him.  I am not sure how much your dog would eat a day (I can look at his food when I go home), but Vinny is 20 pounds and he eats 1 1/4 cup a day.  On days when he is extremely active we give him an extra quarter cup for dinner.  I have included the link for the website of the food we buy him.  I would highly suggest giving it a try if you can afford it.  It costs us about $35 every two weeks for his food.  Which is a lot more than a lot of people pay, but he is so worth it.  It keeps Vinny so healthy and lean and he LOOOOOOOVES the food.  He is a crazy maniac when I bring it out.

We buy it at a store called Krisers Feeding Pets for Life.  They have 2 locations.  One is in Lincoln Park on Clybourn just north of Armitage and the other is in the South Loop on State and 11th.  We've also bought it at The Barking Lot on Irving Park Rd and Ruff Haus Pets which is pretty far up north.  We live in the West Loop so we only go to the other two if Krisers is out of stock.  All of these places are great though.  They have great treats and food and everything is all natural.
