how did you submit it to him? was it through email or did you hand it to him in person? Maybe one of the TA's misplaced it? Maybe it was lumped together with another section he's teaching of the same class?

yeah, if you gave them a hard copy may be it fell/got misplaced?
did you go talk to the people in person?

I don't think you need to freakout! They emailed you, which means they are giving you the benefit of the doubt instead of just assuming you didn't show up. I feel like, worst case scenario, you'll have to take it again.

ditto. they are giving you a chance to explain yourself so im sure that means they are willing to listen.

That happend to me once with a final exam. The teacher didn't remember me handing it in to her,and it wasn't in the stack of papers.
I knew I had taken it ,so she kept looking for it untill she found it stuck half way down the wall behind her desk.

What I am trying to say is that if you keep insisting to your teacher that you took it,they will keep looking for it or give a chance to retake it.

Yeah, just keep telling them what happened and, if possible whatever you can remember about the answer you gave. You always make good grades, from what I remember. I really think it'll be ok. Good luck!
