I downloaded it for free, but it says to clear the bad files I have to buy a serial number or something.  Is there any way to bypass that or do you have to eventually pay?

I've never had to pay, and I've had it for at least 3 years now.  You're using Spybot?  Maybe try wiping the file and downloading again?
