What to do before coloring hair?

So a while back, I used a temporary dye to turn my blonde/highlighted hair to an auburn color. The dye faded quickly and I redyed it, which faded quickly again. Each time I fade though, I don't go back to blonde, I go to a medium redish brown. I am eager to get back to blonde, so I made an appt for highlights.

I'd like to make the least damage as possible, I will explain that to the colorist but in the meantime, what is the best way to prep for hair color? Don't wash for a few days? Deep condition? I assume they will wash and shampoo my hair at the salon, is that bad?

Deep condition. You should do this once a week anyway though.

I don't do anything. But my hairdresser says if you are going to use a clarifying shampoo on colored hair, do it a few days before you get it colored so you minimize fading.

You're supposed to dye hair when it's dirty, so I usually don't wash it for a day beforehand. Any more and I get really oily and gross.
