Would this be rude?
Permalink Closed

There's a blazer I have been eyeing on eBay, but the seller is charging $15 for shipping! The seller states it will be shipped UPS ground, which is really cheap. I calculated the charge, and there's no way it would be over $8 to ship the blazer.

Would it be rude to write them and ask them to consider charging a more reasonable shipping amount? I'm thinking I'd tell them that according the UPS site, the blazer should ship for about $7.

THey have a BIN option, which I"m considering, but I don't want to pay that outrageous shipping charge!

I don't think it'd hurt to ask.  I bet they just figured in ebay and paypal fees into shipping.

Maybe they added extra cost to ship besides shipping itself like a box?

hm, it could be hiugher for packaging... a lot of people also bump it up a bit to voer ebay/paypal feels (so more like S+H). Doesn't hurt to ask though!

It probably is higher to account for packaging, and ebay/paypal fees which can be really high.

You can always ask though, the worst that can happen is they say no.

Well, technically you're not supposed to pad shipping THAT much to account for paypal/ebay fees. I mean, the blazer is only $20. So, $15 to ship seems absurd.

i've had mixed results when trying to negotiate shipping. one nutjob went beserk on me, but i've had a handful of people bring down their prices.

bottom line is, it doesn't hurt to ask.

yeah they jack the shipping fees to cover paypal, which is totally ridic imo. maybe ask if they can send it another method, like usps priority, etc, that would be cheaper?

I haven't ever asked for reduced shipping but have requested politely if they could switch to Priority. UPS is several days slower and for that kind of money a real turnoff. Usually I let them know that I'm excited about getting it, something along that line (totally true:) and most are happy to do it. Thing is some sellers use UPS exclusively so they're the ones who tend to not want to switch.

I just happily paid $40 shipping to one seller for two wall lamps she claimed were $100 apiece. The shipping was so ridiculous that no one bid and we got them for like $10 bringing the total to $50. The actual ship price turned out to be 15.52 so she was out waaay more than she would have been if she had been reasonable about the shipping since the type of lamps she was selling went really high in other auctions. Her loss, my gain.

Every seller has their ways and it's a learning process on both ends. I think you should ask and make sure they know that you aren't expecting them to comply but that you love the item and would love to bid on it. Good luck!

I've never even thought to ask a seller to bring shipping down. I mean, I know that they know they're jacking the shipping price up. And they probably know that I know they jacked it up. That's just how they get more money. I guess it couldn't hurt to ask, but I wouldn't expect anyone to lower the price, personally. They already know they're over-charging, and that's where they plan to make some extra money.

I have asked many times to lower the shipping price, even made offers on the actual price, and I have nothing but good results. I once asked a lady to lower a Vuitton bag down by $70 and she did!!! I don't think it is rude, I have been asked before too, and I usuallu always lower the price or add shipping into the winning bid price. It is not like you are bargaining at Saks...it is Ebay..people make their own prices, and as some of you have seen, some people OVVVErcharge! As long as you ask in a polite way, it should be no problem. :)
