What would do you? HR related...
Permalink Closed

So,  I have a new department head manager who’s a real ass.  He treats everyone like crap and HR had gotten a few complaints about him already. He’d never done anything to me, until the other day I had to miss a department meeting to attend some other departmental issues and I wrote him an email an hour before the meeting and told him I couldn’t make the meeting.  He wrote back a nasty email that basically said there was no excuse to miss it and I better not ever let that happen again. His approach was completely unacceptable. Never in my 10 years here has anyone talked to me like that. I forwarded it to my supervisor and she immediately calls the department head up and basically asked him to offer me an apology. He did and I accepted. My question is, a co-worker of mine (who is also a very close friend) is having some real issues with this new manager. He’s constantly belittling here, making her check in all the time, etc. She’s gone to HR to complain and she has asked me to forward the meeting email thread that was shared between me and the department head so that HR has even more proof that he’s being a real dick.   I don’t want to because I just want to stay out of all this political crap but at the same time she is more than a co-worker. What would you do?I guess I just wouldn’t want this department head to find out that I forwarded that email to HR and therefore jeopardize my position.

I would be really uncomfortable getting involved in something like that. If my friend complained to HR and then HR came to ask me questions or get my opinion, I'd answer. But I don't think I'd take the initiative and forward emails that don't have anything to do with her, and get involved, especially sinc he might find out and get even angrier at you.

I woudln't forward the email, but I would tell her she could mention that I had also had problems with him. That way, if HR wants more info about your case they can come to you and she can leave her issue just about her.

Any information used to build a case for hostile work environment can not be linked back to the employee for retaliation (by law).  Because of this your job can not be in jeopardy.  If they were to retaliate against you for this you would have a serious law suit on your hands.
